4 hits away from 3,000 is he a all time great, imo no doubt,i will go as far as to say he may have been better the Ripken.Ripken had 2 mvps and neither year statistically wasnt close to Jeters best year.Better then Larkin great leader.some say overrated i disagree.

Let the argument start.

No doubt it. He's one of the best I've ever seen.

I'm a Red Sox fan but objective. An all time great I don't think so but my bar is pretty high.

But if I was starting a baseball team in the past 15 years he would be my top pick because of his class, character, and silent leadership. Always ran out every ground ball and in the era of a camera with every phone has never came close to a scandal.

He even took on Yankee ownership to task for putting his contract negotiations in public.

First ballot Hall of Famer no doubt. Made the play of my lifetime against Oakland in the playoffs by being in a position that no other shortstop would think of.

My two cents.

Just so you know where I am coming from, i am a huge Yankee/Jeter fan. Jeter will forever be a Yankee Legend and possibly a modern day legend overall. Not sure how to compare him to Ripken, but as good as Cal was...it would be interesting to see what his stats would have been if he was surrounded by the players that the Yankees had over those years. One other monkey wrench to throw in to the discussion....again, as much as i love Jeter, i cant honestly say that he is the teams best shortstop and just might have to give Arod the nod there...hmmm. rbj

Only liked the Yankees when I was in single digits. Of course, that was when they had players with #s 7,8,9 & 16. Not a bad group! But I digress.

This article tends to get the focus of Jeter vis a vis other Yankees: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/764260-derek-jeter-isnt-even-the-fifth-greatest-yankee-of-all-time

Now, I despise them.

Notwithstanding, I am a huge Jeter fan and he & Mariano are two of the greatest players of the past 20 years. Both are certain Cooperstown choices and up there with the finest of their positions ever.

I swing past Jeter's Reg Season stats to see what he's done when the $$$$ is on the line. He has a career +300 avg in almost 150 Playoff Games and jacked it up for the World Series to .329! He was obviously a solid contributor to 5 W.S. Championships.

There are four players that played fabulous D that I have watched: Ozzy, Cal, Robbie Alomar & Jeter. That one relay play alone exemplifies the smarts exhibited by very, very heady players, of which he is clearly one.

Finally, he played his entire career in the NYC pressure cooker, dating models and stars and conducting his personal life with the same class as he does on the field.

FWIW- I grew up as an O's fan and still bleed black and orange. But as a kid growing up I learned to respect the Yankees primarily because of Mantle and Maris. In 1961 the home run race between the two was magical. Mickey was hurt late in the season and Roger went on to hit 61.
He hit #59 off of Jack Fisher in Baltimore when I attended. Roger hit #60 vs. Milt Pappas in NY and #61 vs. Tracy Stallard of the Sox.

The reason that I despise the Red Sox is that in my lifetime they have won 2 WS and their fans walk around as if they are the greatest team ever- give me a break - please !!

Your right about the Sox but please remember that we had the Yankee fans shove it in our face till we won. I'll be the first to admit without Epstein and spending almost the same amount of cash as the Yankees we wouldn't have even achieved that.

When the Birds were good I used to listen on the radio think WBAL used to get the signal pretty good. There was one year when Lowenstein was hot and they were winning lots of games in their last at bat. Think it was 83 the year they won the World series. That's how hard I rooted against the Yankees.

My interpretation of an all time great is pretty high it's not a bias against Jeter. He's a legend here read this story.

CC has a chance of achieving that if he stays healthy and gets 300 wins. The guy is a monster and a class act also.

The year they were winning a lot of games in the last at bat was 1979. DeCinces hit a game winning homer on a Friday I believe and they had a run of three or four walk off wins.

EDIT:

I found it, June 22, 1979, Doug hit a three run homer in the bottom of the 9th for a 6-5 win. The next day, Murray won the 1st game of a double header with a 3 run bottom 9 blast to complete a comeback from 6-2 down for an 8-6 win.

In the second half of the DH, The Crow completed a 3 run rally with an RBI hit in the bottom of the 8th, though it wasn't a walkoff. Sammy Stewart closed it out.

Though the O's lost the series that year, it is always the year I will remember most, even more than 1983.

Shows you how old I am remember Jon Miller during that run saying "they've done it again" or when it came to the bottom of the ninth " we have them right we want them".

I am pretty sure Jon Miller was not with the O's during 1979, but I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure Chuck Thompson was still the man.

Chuck Thompson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Chuck_Thompson/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm), the old smoothie of the Baltimore Orioles (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Baltimore_Orioles/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm)' broadcasting booth, is bouncy and alive above fan noise. He is into the play-by-play of a crucial situation earlier in the season—Doug DeCinces of the Orioles (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Baltimore_Orioles/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) at bat in the bottom of the ninth inning with a man on base and the Orioles (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Baltimore_Orioles/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) a run behind. Thompson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Chuck_Thompson/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) calls a long drive by DeCinces, and there is tumult in the radio booth. Charlie Eckman, the sometime guest colorman, is shouting, "Get out of here, get out of here." Thompson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Chuck_Thompson/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) picks up the call as the ball falls into the seats for a game-winning home run, and then the crowd noise takes over. "Wow!" shouts Eckman, and the mikes pick up the chant of the fans calling for DeCinces to come out of the dugout to take a bow. The ballplayer responds, there is another roar, and Thompson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Chuck_Thompson/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) says, "What a great moment in Baltimore (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Baltimore_Orioles/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) baseball history."

Sorry, got a bit off topic so,

YES, I think Jeter is an all time great and is a class act.

Just looked him up he started in 83 that's when I must have heard him in Baltimore. I don't remember the WFBR call letters listening. My recollection was WBAL, which I think was a news station also.

There was a time the O's were on WBAL, but I'm not sure of the years. WFBR was a very weak signal.

It was 1983 I remember this now that I found it. My friend was a huge Ripkin fan and we did listen to a bunch of the games at night on the radio. For some reason WBAL sticks in my mind it would fade sometimes but usually we could hear a good majority of the games.

Largest Twi-Night Home Doubleheader Attendance
(vs. Baltimore, Sept. 10, 1983) - 55,605

The O's came into the stadium and swept the 2 games and put the Yankees out of their misery.

Yeah, most of their great hitters simply crushed the ball. Few pure hitters.
