In today's 3rd race at River Downs, $10,132 was bet to show on a horse (#3, Donna's Point) who was 30-1 on the morning line, and who went off at 23-1. The total show pool was $13,412, so Donna's Point had 75.5% of the pool bet on her. She finished off the board, and the 2-5 favorite (who won the race) paid $7.20 to show.

I would imagine the money was bet on the wrong horse, and the person really might be jumping tonight

Clearly pool manipulation....... bet big on the horse that has no chance to show then bet at a nonpoool/offshore book huge on the lock fave to show for a small fortune.Hope his bookie does not realize what he did though or else he may find his bet cancelled and lose the 10k.

Ie. bet 10 k on the bomb, intentionally lose
Bet 20k on the fave to show offshore, mkae 52k minus the 10 in on the bomb net 42k etc....

Then not get paid by the offshore ADW, and you're back to square one.

I am inclined to believe somebody hit the wrong button somewhere.......

This is what was done. Some dude started talking to me one night at my local OTB. I had never seen him there before. He explained what he was doing. The process mentioned above. He told me that he was in partnership with a trainer and some other guy. Never saw him again after that night.

The chances of finding a book that would hold $20,000 on a horse at River downs is slim to none and slim done left town. The pools are so small there that if the book would take a wager there it would be limited to a small amount.

I agree. Considering the race had a 2-5 favorite, it's much more likely that someone wanted to bet the 10K on that horse and bet the wrong number.

the expression "this is where two fools met" comes to mind here

Obviously there are many ways it COULD have gone, and no one is saying the guy will get paid out even if he intentionlly tried to manipulate the pool if he played with a bookie or offshore. Of course if the guy was trying to pull a fast one on his bookmker would it not make sense to bet the bomb 3 horse as the button is right next to the 2 and claim some other schmuck hit the wrong button and you deserve to get paid? Once again just offering a reasonable explanation other than the "wrong button" explanation. Some bookies would take a wager on river downs for 20k from a top client and not blink or possible take the bet hoping the guy loses and if he wins say sorry not paying you tried to hustle me. Not to mention the guy would not have to have bet 20 k just an example, if his bookie took 5k on the 2 to show thats 18k -10k he lost in the pool and 5 he put up still clears 3k profit easily. But as I previously said there are bookmakers out there who would accept 20k wagers on small tracks from top players rather then watch them go to someone else and lose that 200k come football season.

Maybe it's just a bad bet. Occam's razor.

Exactly. Almost zero chance that bet would be paid off and then the guy is out his original 10k. Live and learn.

I doubt a guy would bet $10K and NOT check his ticket.

If you're betting online, I dont think its so easy to cancel.

And I seriously doubt any bookmaker would take a show bet like that and hold it. Even if the bettor bets win and show, its way too easy to rig the pool.
