A lack of an agreement on the state budget means the shut down of all non-essential state government services as of July 1. The racing commission is closed for business. Canterbury is required to shut down.

Running Aces is also closed. I watched perhaps one of the most surreal scenes imaginable, when I witnessed a "reverse fill" on a blackjack table, where all the chips are removed from the dealer's rack and sent back to the cage.

This is the result of the election of intransigent legislators. In addition to the state employees, these intransigent legislators have now forced the racetracks to lay off about 1,700 employees.

Sounds like the state needs Jesse "The Body" back in office!

What I heard of Judge Gearin's ruling boggles my mind, especially since the track reimburses the commission in advance for the regulatory costs and it appears the horse racing laws specifically appropriate such reimbursements to the racing commission.

Any updates on the Canterbury situation? I have always enjoyed the Dog Days handicapping contest they hold in August.

Just goes to show that state governments do not belong in the racing business.
It would be just as easy to regulate the business of racing and wagering from afar. But no WAY are states passing up on an opportunity to skim from the business.

The Minnesota state government does make much if any money from the horse races. The race track could shut down and they would not even notice. The days of governments getting rich off horse racing are long over. But the casino is a different matter entirely. That is worth a ton. They have a very good poker room and I know some people who go up there to play occasionally.

You have to feel bad for those who shipped-up there for the summer expecting to make their living, and for those who live there, and are suddenly stuck without a job.

Canterbury should be opening again sometime on Thursday. Don't know if they will have live racing on Thursday or maybe they will wait until Friday.

Especially when the tack ALREADY paid its bill to the state for the year, in advance, and still got screwed over by morons. There was not a penny of money saved by closing the track, and who knows how much unnecessary expense because of it. That state has a lot more horse asses off track than on track.

It would be no great loss if they reopened the casino and kept the horse track closed.

Free admission and the string of 110 degree heat indexes will be over.

They may make up for lost days by adding races to upcoming days, adding days, or extending the season, or a combination if they get approval.

It would be to me. Although the quality of racing has declined, Canterbury is a wonderful facility, they run a great handicapping contest, and I look forward to visiting every year.
