I'm new to wifi, always had hardlines. Where I am now we have a wifi set-up.

Can someone explain

speed 135mbps?
signal strength very good.

I guess this is good? But for some reason, downloading has been lousy (very slow) Even just web pages will take forever to load. Could it be my browser? Some thing has changed, because it seemed ok up til a couple of weeks ago.

If there is a lot of people on it, will that slow things down?

yes, that will kill it.

135 sucks, mine at home says 900-1100 usually.

I don't know if this will help but this happened to me. We put in wifi and my speed for everything dropped. The rep came out and said I had 14 computer devices running in my house. Since I only have two I said for the TWC man to fix it.

Long story short...

Your neighbors can jump your signal. So can Ipods and damn near anything else. Change your password to something complicated that you will remember and see if it helps. Generic passwords make you a target.

Also, we moved the system more toward the center of the house. (the distance thing)

It is a shot, (probably not a good one), but it helped me.

Get someone to your place ASAP who knows how to setup a secure WiFi connection. Or, read some of the horror stories of people in the news lately who ran unsecured WiFi connections in their home...

Mike, I don't control the computer wifi, the one that does is out of state for a while. I live in an old Mansion (150 yrs old and BIG), that could be a problem in itself, heavy copper wiring and maybe even lead paint? Two questions.....can you tell how many 'people' are on it at one time? Where would you look? And just to know, what does the mbps stand for?

If I can check and find out this is being hopped by a lot, I think he would let me call some one in. We've had this for a year, and has been decent enough til recently, maybe the 'hood' caught on?

from above

Megabyte per second
(not to be confused with Mbps - Mega bits per second) A megabyte per second (MB/s or MBps) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to:
8,000,000 bits per second, or
1,000,000 bytes per second, or
1,000 kilobytes per second, or
8 megabits per second.

to see how many are logged on, you have to have administrator rights to the wireless router that is supplying your connection. Then you can log into the router and see who is connected.

You may be able to purchase a wireless-relay, which is a smaller network unit that would possibly increase the strength of the wifi to a mid-point in the large house.
Best compatibility would be of the same brand as the router.

Some vendors will call a wireless relay by other names. D-link used to call them Access points.

Also, check the setting for the wireless part of the router. Sometimes the signal strength can be set to something less than 100%. If it is less than 100%, change it and you might not need to get either a booster, or, add an access point.

We have done that, some rooms didn't get it, now they do

OK, I can do that, thanks

Thanks all, Like I said, I'm not the 'man', but I have access and maybe can get something done.

Hey Ralph, speaking from memory (mine), I used to get 181 mbps, but it was like 2MB's ps.....which to me was fantastic!

but that was another day

let me know what brand of wireless router you are using, we can get to the menus of the router at any given time and see what else is using our system!...for most people, they get to the router menu by typing the address into the address bar...it may look like this....
192.168.0.1 or
10.0.0.1 or
192.168.1.0 or
10.0.1.0

if you purchased the router you should have access to a manual telling you your specific address to use

once there(incidentally, this is one address you don't really need the internet for, as it is part of the router and what I call 'hardwired' into the system).....once there, you will be prompted for username and password....your router comes with standard entries for both, and, unless you or someone else has changed these, remains the same.....this is how some hack into your system, knowing that many people don't change these as they should.

once into the menus, there should be a heading that goes something like this

Attached devices (alluding to those wireless or ethernet equipment NOW ONLINE)
clicking on that should display a list......ideally, you should see your own wired devices(a desktop for example) and wireless(any wireless laptop you run, or an ipad or itouch or other tablet device, any wifi capable phones you might be using in that manner, etc....my home includes a couple wireless game devices as well, any of which might be running, or not....wii's, ps3s, xboxs, ....you may have more than you think yourself...surely a bandwidth intensive gaming console running on your system will slow your internet connection speed considerably if you speed is only basic dsl to start with....the house next door runs an unprotected wireless connection and it is roadrunner cable service...sometimes my ipad will find that when I start it up. I never use it though, unless I don't catch that I'm on it, cause its not as good as my dsl line from ATT. They would take a hit though if I were to stay on, I use quite a bit of bandwidth at times, not so much on the ipad but the laptops sometimes use torrents for download purposes.

Best, senortout, and, oh a quick added note....when you are finished in the router menus, be sure and log out properly, there is an entry that you click on to do that.

Wonder if this would work?

I have a friend who keeps one of his routers unprotected and open to the world on the theory that should he get caught, ah acquiring illicit copies of music and movies he can claim that "someone must have been stealing my signal." Just wonder if that would fly.

Just wonder if that would fly.If I were your friend I wouldn't want to give the Federales any reason to confiscate my computer to make sure that it was free of illicit materials.

The MPAA and RIAA have a lot of clout it seems.

181 mbps

Would someone please chime in here besides me?

I am unaware of any service in the US that gets this kind of speed.

The fastest we have here is up to 101Mbps, but you have to pay an extra $55/mo for that.

Me, I get 50-55Mbps for an extra $14.95/mo. And it's pretty sweet:
