View Full Version : Ramon The Great

Ramon is a good rider, but not as good as some people in this forum think he proved again today how inept he can be w/ his ride on Zagora in the 6th, siting on the best horse in the race by a pole lets the leader get away w/ 26 52 --117 and then excepts to catch him, no excuse just a lousy ride.

she's not as good as him now, but in a few years she will be just as good, ANNA NAPRAVNIK.

what is great about dominguez is he has a great agent, and ramon does his homework on every race. when he has choices in a race steve usually puts him on the right horse. occasionally he owes somone a favor or is committed and rides the not so good horse.put that all together with his physical abilities and you now have a great rider.

Ridiculous thread. Every rider has a bad race or makes a move from time to time that looks bad in hindsight.

Agree with lambo.. Anna is going to be an all-time legend in this game before it's all said and done.

I would watch the race again and look at the past performances again. I actually think Ramon gave the horse a good ride. In turf routes sometimes the positioning can be tricky as far as pace. The horse who chased the pace, couldn't hold second and he beat the winner last time.If Ramon was closer he probably wouldn't have been second.

Ramon is solid and pretty consistent, but he'd never be jockey of the year if he was riding in California. Gareth Gomez and Mike Smith are way better than he is.

Only the overconfident R.Dominguez could lose on on that horse yesterday if I were the owner I'll make him make up the difference in purse money, in Europe he'll probably get days for a ride like that, the one good thing about R.D is that if you like another horse in a race he is riding in you get better odds.

To put Paco Lopez on that list is laughable. He is a good young jock but his over aggressive rides will keep him off the national go to list of jocks for major stakes. If he can cut back on the aggressiveness and avoid suspensions, I can see him as an Eclipse finalist down the road.

Every jock makes mistakes, no one is perfect. In my opinion, if Ramon was able to cut the curner better when turning for home, he would have won with Zagora. But it didn't happen and lets give Rajiov credit for stealing it on the frotn end with Giants Play. Also, Ramon isn't the only one to blame, how about rest of the field for allowing Rajiv to steal it.

Let's see, you have never heard of Friend or Foe, you think John Piesen still works at DRF ( he has been gone over a decade ), and Alan Garcia ( and Paco Lopez ) are better riders than Ramon Dominguez.

But I'm a bad guy for pointing out that you don't follow racing at all.

I would need a few shots of some homemade moonshine for me to think Smith is remotely close to Dominguez. P. Val? Had all the potential in the world. But drugs and alcohol and antics like shaving his body before a hair follicle test helped ruin that potential. Calvin Borel, maybe if he rode his whole career at Churchill Downs. Outside of Churchill, I'd rather have the Ramon Dominguez that rides quarter horses in Canada before Borel.

Average at best anywhere else he rides.

You should probably check your stats before you make these posts.

Ramon has been a little better than average away from Aqu/Bel this year.

In 78 starts he has 19% winners and 56% in the top 3. Yes the 19% is quite a bit lower than the 27.5% winners he has in NY but still quite a bit better than some of the great riders listed in this forum.

http://www.equibase.com/stats/View.cfm?tf=year&tb=jockey

You will see that most of the top riders nationally have win % between 17%-23%. So Ramon's 19% on the road is hardly average.

Today's 8th at BEL.. I don't understand the ride. :4: Tanglewood Tale stalked the pace on the back, moved up under light urging, and was in a good spot turning for home... except Ramon quit on her as soon as they hit the stretch. Didn't ride her, didn't whip. Not being urged, she quickly fell back.

This was only her 2nd start, and her first route, and I can understand her tiring, but I didn't see him even ask her for anything.

ramon is a workhorse. He can ride consistently at a high level over a lot of mounts. He's a good choice to ride favorites on a day in day out basis. He excels going wire to wire in turf routes.

Wow, I really can't believe an anti-Ramon thread is dug up after 3 months because of this perceived bad ride. Ramon's ride cost this horse at least 32, if not 33 lengths; she should have been right there on the wire.....

FantasticDan

You should probably watch the replay more closely.I did, several times. When does he ask her? When Durkin says, "There goes Tanglewood Tale with a move"? He may have gone from relaxed to a light ride at that point, but he's still not doing that much. When they turn into the stretch and everyone else starts riding hard, Ramon is still up in his seat doing nothing and then looks over his shoulder to move her inside, where he basically eases her. At no point of this race was this filly ridden aggressively.

If you see otherwise, please tell me when.

I have no issue with RD or any NYRA rider. I'd be asking the same question no matter who had the ride. But since this race involved RD and I didn't want to start a new thread about a single race, I did a search for RD and bumped this one.

He's one of those guys who is very good at doing the same thing in the same circumstances, day in day out. Away from the NYRA tracks, he's still above average, but he shares that spot with about 10 others.

I noted the look over his shoulder in my post, and I agree it's entirely possible that he felt something wasn't right with her. It's really the only explanation that explains the ride. But as this is a horse racing forum, I thought I would make the inquiry and ask what others saw. Thanks for the response.

The two previous posts both mentioned that he looked back. I will grant that Ramon is a very good jockey. To me, he has his faults. Two, in particular, come to mind: 1. he waits for seams to open and they don't and 2. he looks back when he has taken a lead at the turn. The 2nd caused what should have been a winning bet on a 7-1 play. The horse opened 2-lengths at the stretch turn and Ramon looks back, causing a loss in momentum. He should view the replay in the jockey's room or at home.

Nobody's perfect...
But the bottom line for me is that in NY I wouldn't rather have anyone else riding my horse, except for maybe JJ Castellano.

If Ramon didn't persevere with his ride I am sure it was for a legit reason. No, he isn't above criticism, but I think he should get chastised for putting his mount in the wrong spot, maybe breaking too slowly, choosing the wrong path etc.....which I am sure he's guilty of from time to time.

As far as the jock looking back or under his arm is concerned...
I LOVE it when a jock on the horse I bet is abreast of another horse and begins looking for other competition...it's like he's saying that he has the guy next to him...and he usually does.

If he doesn't look under his arm and loses, without looking 'mighty foolish', it still costs his backers the same amount of money.
The only time I ever thought a look back cost a jock was when Calvin looked over his shoulder on Street Sense in the Preaknes and saw what he didn't wanna see...Curlin!
Still, Robbie may have nailed him anyway, but Calvin had to quit pumping for a moment to look back and see Curlin.

she has had issues, and this was too much for her. She had to be pulled up and wasn't sound after trying the turn. Ramon actually put her in a prominent position stalking a 45-1 shot leader. I can see where it could look like he didn't try.
