View Full Version : How does $169.80 to show sound?

It happened tonight in the 2nd @ Mountaineer. An odds on favorite must have received the attention of the Bridge Jumping MMB and finished off the board. Monitor Pass, an 80-1 shot ran third and paid $169.80 to show.

That's the biggest show payoff I can remember in 25 years following this sport.

I saw that on HRTV, and I thought that it was a mistake

Could've been a bomber at Arlington today. I noted that in the race with Trigger Fish Lane there was about $104k of $110k of show money on the heavy favorite who actually after the bell ended up being 2nd choice. Ended up 3rd only making that by a 1/2 length or so and if the jock gave up could've got 4th and triggered those huge show pays.

Well, early night. It was the 2nd race and HRTV then exited, stage left.

Seem to recall one at CD about 7 years ago paying $244 to show.

There was a $470 show price in a harness race at Sportsman's in 1993, but $169 is certainly a healthy return for a bridgejumper race.

A comment was made in the booth before the race about the bridge jumpers piling on.

Here are some show bombs that took place during a 2 1/2 year span from November 2007 to June 2010. Most of them happened at tracks with small pools.

I watched all of those races, as they happened, and made screenshots of the WPS pools and the results.

The pool information and the payoffs are from Brisnet Supertote (http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/totedb/tracks.cgi) or Twin Spires (http://www.twinspires.com/). The results (except for the Northlands Harness and the Arapahoe Park races) are available at The (http://www.racingchannel.com/results_archive.htm)Racing Channel Results Archive (http://www.racingchannel.com/results_archive.htm).

The Saratoga harness race I happened to bet the field to show because I overheard some loudmouth touting a 1/9 shot from the meadowlands coming to saratoga - no way he could lose, yada, yada yada. That was my first bet ever at that track. I thanked and offered to buy the guy and his buddy a beer.

Record Show Payoff $470 At Sportsman's
Date: July 27, 1993

Show bettors reaped the largest show payoff - $470 - in harness racing history Monday night at Sportsman's Park.

The huge payoff was created when an unidentified bettor in Las Vegas wagered $100,000 to show on a heavy favorite HP Campion finished out of the money.

Alltogethernow, a 30-1 shot, won the second race and his payoff was $64.40 to win, $29.40 to place and $470 to show.

Runner-up Think Of That paid $11.40 and $183.20.

I hit the Ferndale race. The favorite was a need the lead type in a cheap field of claimers where HTR said he'd face pace pressure. I bet $10 to show on everyone else in the field. My biggest anti-bridgejump score to date.

On the MNR race, I didn't bet the race right playing exactas instead of using ALL against a favorite I thought wouldn't hit the board. I told lamboguy that the MNR grass course is so much different from GP that I thought the favorite's late pace weakness might result in him finishing off the board. He was smarter than I was playing the second best horse big to show. :bang:

There was a race at Dover last fall with win only where the favorite had the 8 hole and the 2nd favorite the five hole. The 8 left hard, the five tried to park him and they killed each other. The winner paid over 99-1 and the 2nd and 3rd horses were 99-1+ as well.

Yes, that was the race.

Powerful Mist had the 8 hole after beating the same Delaware sire stake horses multiple times during the year. Three Martinis had I think the 4 or 5 and Montrell Teague decided to go at it with the favorite PM. They both finished way off the board thus the gigantic prices.

I didn't play the race because I couldn't see PM getting beat but at the same time wouldn't take 1-20 form the 8 hole.

Yeah, that was the filly Delaware sire stakes final. Badlands Jenna was the overwhelming favorite and had a much better post. I know of one guy that came in for like $10k on that one and the same guys reupped the next day on the one that blew up.

The December 4 and December 5, 2010 races at Dover are also discussed in this thread (http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=77932).

In the December 4 race the entry finished 1st and 4th. In the December 5 race Three Martini's finished 3rd.
