A gal I went to grade-school with always writes about this program on Fart Book.

I tell my 6 year old nephew that television shows are make-believe and not real.

I would tell you the same thing!

it's real all right.....if any company was smart they would make Chum Lee their spokesman. The show is very entertaining.

I like it......... some weird shit comes through that place.

It's amazing what people have in their garages etc

It's on Netflix now too......... and On Demand via Fios.

You can catch up anytime you want.

The old man is a funny too. Retired Navy guy..........

You can learn an awful lot on that show.
The Pawn shop itself is a huge rank above the dives that I've seen.
First class show.

Here's Chum Lee

Cool show, especially when they bring in a specialist to give the history of an item. Place looks much bigger on tv than in real life. rbj

Great show.. entertaining, educational..

But as always with these shows, "reality" isn't quite what it's made out to be. The items that you see brought in are arranged and scouted out ahead of time (no other way to make it interesting and keep the production on a streamlined schedule), and sometimes the customers aren't even the owners of the items, but are just playing the part.

I've heard that there's a separate facility from the main pawn shop where most of the filming takes place. You may notice the quick shots between appraisals sometimes of the place just packed with people.. those are shots of the actual shop during business hours. The few people you see meandering about in the background during filmed appraisals are just "extras".. :D

i don't know many shows where some guy goes walkin in with a real gold bar from the pirates, or drives in , in a 32 lincoln convertible and leave with $95000 in gold coins in a sack over his back...good stuff

Another reality show, but this time with a twist:

3 very well fed rounders with tons of street smarts! I like the history hooks of all the weird shite people bring through the door.

The key with all these buy-sell shows, is that you need to be on your game about everything to turn a profit. These 3 lard asses know their stuff OR do a street shout out to ensure they do.

Its my 9 year old son's favorite show. I love watching it with him. He learns a ton from it. The other day, we were looking for movies on Netflix and I put Apollo 13 in our queue. He said "Daddy, Apollo 13 was a spaceship". I said it was and asked him if he learned about it in school. He said "No, someone sold some stuff from Apollo 13 on Pawn Stars."

I thought that this Joe is real.. Its based on a real pawn shop in Vegas so I am assuming you can go there and see for yourself. My son and I love watching what strange things people bring in.

At the fair the other year we had a good time checking out the carnival barkers...we paid a buck and went in to see The Worlds Biggest Pig!, and another buck to go in to see The Worlds Smallest Horse!

I came up with the idea to have a little tent called The Worlds Dumbest Man!...and you could pay a buck to go see him. When you go inside the booth there would just be a mirror.

BUT..if I had to pick someone to actually sit inside the booth, it would be Chum Lee. It'd cost $5 if you wanted to talk to The Worlds Dumbest Man!.

I was in that pawn shop some years before the show started up and remember seeing the main guy "Rick" selling a guitar to some guy. I love poking about in pawn shops and thrift stores. I almost never buy anything but books from Goodwill, but it's fun none the less. I really didn't like this pawn shop as much as some, as it is way too clean and well organized, but anyone can visit and these people really do work there.

MMTC has a special trashy place in my heart. A show I watched as a kid, on network TV, that I knew was a total waste of time but I enjoyed watching.

Avery Schrieber, Ann Sothern, created by Allan Burns(the show does not appear in Mr Burns Wikipedia page).

Not the worst show of all time, it has been mentioned as the second worst.

Have never viewed this program and unlikely to do so. First of all, do not watch so called reality shows. Second, as a history buff this type of program airing on the History Channel is irritating, and, imo, has no place there. E! or Spike would be a better place for it.

Going to go see the shop for myself at the end of the month, just for kicks. I have watched most all the episodes, and enjoy estimating the value of items brought in before the deal goes down. You can learn some good stuff if you enjoy flea markets, garage sales and the like. You never know if you are walking by what someone determines to be junk, only to find out that you have learned otherwise. Wonder if even a small percentage of stuff televised is even available to walk-ins. Bet they run an eBay site, and use Heritage auctions as well, for the quick turn.

Watch it all the time.Whenever people need fast cash, pawnbrokers are there to strike a deal and they've been doing it for a long time. Some entertaining episodes here.
You think Citi Bank,JPM /Chase and Bank America should branch out to Pawn Shops? They certainly do not seem to be in business to lend money today unless you put a relative up for collateral.I remember reading an article that Bank of America was buying domain names with derogatory names to protect their their poor little executives from being trashed. :D :D

One of my fav shows. Its kinda fake a little.. I mean when someone comes in with something and Rick, or Big Hoss talks about the background of it, I feel that they had to know that item was coming in and researched it. Great show though.. I loved the one where the guy came in and had all the rupees fused together and RIck offered him 200k, but he wanted 700k. That was crazy.

Early in its debut I trust most were real customers. In time it's become obvious they're all plants. Whether they came to store on their own and the producers axed if they'd like to be on the show or they were selected for the show.

Most of the high buck items are all plants. Who would bring in an item worth $10K and sell it for $4k? Any goof can figure out how to sell something on Ebay.

Pawn shops can be interesting joints to nose around but oftentimes the owners/staff are so jaded by dealing with people hard-up for lettuce they're a bit rusty on how to deal with a regular schmoe, without an agenda, walking into their shop.

1. What place does a reality program that takes place today have on a network supposedly dedicated to historical events? Would you like to see a cooking show on TVG or HRTV for example?
2. On historical forums at other websites there has been widespread gripes directed at the HC and much panning of the show.
3. We can view such items on "Antiques Roadshow". How do they relate, for example, to the battle of Agincourt or Caesar's Gallic Commentaries?
Remain unconvinced. Those who wish to be entertained by bread and circus type shows are free to do so, but I will pass.

You're entitled to your opinion regarding the show, and so am I.
Readers here can evaluate the merits of either.
But offering a negative opinion on something that you've never bothered to watch, is likely to be a stretch for most visitors to fathom.
You may make lots of strong posts on this forum.
But, 1 bad post, without substantiation will negate them, and impact the value attributed to your future posts.

Enjoy your evening.

I do not watch American Idol or Survivor either. I dislike so called reality shows and avoid them. Made the mistake of watching one episode of "The Real Housewives of Orange County" once, and perhaps that soured me on reality shows. Will stick mostly to news, sports, history, travel, wildlife, and a few carefully selected dramatic shows and old movies, and not going to argue about it here or anywhere else.

There are many buy/sell type shows on tv these days. My favorites are in this order:

1. Pawn Stars

2. American Pickers

3. Canadian Pickers

4. Antiques Roadshow

--I tried watching some episodes of a few other pawn shop or auction-type tv shows, but I didn't find them very interesting.

--I see lots of old episodes of "Pawn Stars' are available for viewing at www.stagevu.com ...they even have an old episode of 'American Pickers' at that site too. Just do a 'search' at that site if you care to watch some of those tv shows.

I see the Pawn Stars have a tour schedule as well this year according to the info at this link:

--Just scroll down to near the bottom of the page.

--What's interesting is that one of their stops will be at Hastings Park. Are any of the Pace Advantage Vancouverites planning on seeing the Pawn Stars in person that day?

I have 2 lifelong friends who own pawnshops. Their take is they don't tie up
their money in junk they can't sell quickly. Most of their business now is gold
and silver. They think these pawn shows are as phoney as the Kardashians.
Do they watch the shows? Yup, mostly for laughs.

this reminds me -- this Wolfe guy pronounces his name "woof". I just wanted to know if I'm alone in my reaction to that, it's like nails on a chalkboard. I literally want to punch anyone in the face that says "woof".

which reminds me -- you know what other word people can be weird about? Breakfast. I knew a guy pronounced it breaf-kast. And I knew a girl pronounced it brea-fast. No K. What is it with people?

which reminds me -- you know why I love the Alligator People show?

A.) People born and raised in this country.
B.) Requiring subtitles when speaking.

I don't really love Alligator People...but any time I'm flipping around and I see subtitles, I stop.

Hardcore Pawn is totally lame.
It's one of those rage or argument "reality" shows that's actually staged.
Like the pathetic Southern Fried Stings or Operation Repo.

Reality ain't what it used to be...i remember my nephew saying that The Osbournes show was scripted/staged and they gave it away in the last episode on purpose.

I find myself watching NatGeo more and more these days...that or the independent local channel that shows old episodes of Streets of San Francisco, Hawaii Five-O, Police Story and others
