One of my favorite days every year and NYRA has done a fantastic job of putting together a strong card with a lot of interesting betting races. A lot has been made of how the threat of rain will impact things. Obviously if it's sloppy, I'll adjust some things, but as of now I'm figuring fast main track.
Belmont
1st- #5 Seal Cove has done little wrong in his 2 starts. Won like a good thing in his debut and really finished up strongly on the poly at Keeneland last time once he got into the clear. He was probably best that day, figures to get some help on the front end and is a colt with a nice future.
Play- Win bet, and a double 5 with 4,5 in the 2nd.
2nd- I think the race goes Chad Brown's uncoupled entry. #4 Crushing struggled over the slop last out, so if the track is wet his chances probably need to be downgraded. But he ran a winning race two back, switches to Brown, who is very good with new arrivals into his barn and if he can avoid being to keyed up with the addition of blinkers, is the one to beat IMO. Will also use newcomer Bold Choice. Working steady since March for his debut, picks up the services of Dominguez who is 2 for 2 for Brown at the meet and I think he's well meant in here.
Play- .50 pick 4 4,5 // 4,10,13 // 3,4,5,7 // 4,7,11
4th- Fascinating race and a real good betting race. I was surprised to see #3Police Chatter so far back last time. However, it might have been a good thing because there is a lot of speed in here. He's going to have to run a lot better to turn the tables on #5 Ripples n' Waves, but if he's involved a little earlier I think he can. I also think #4 Mineswept is very interesting. Goes out first time for Rudy Rodriguez, which is a 37% move with a $3.05 ROI. Rudy is also very strong off the layoff and I believe this is the first horse he is training for Flying Zee Stable, which leads me to believe he's well meant. For pick 4 purposes also using #7 Rattlesnake Bridge.
Play- Win bet #3. Exacta box 3,4 with 3,4,5,7,11
5th- #11Power Dreams had no chance last time with the slow pace and was beaten by what might be the best NYB turfer other than Straight Story. He gets a little more pace this time and his trainer is way too good to be going this bad.
Play- Exacta 11 with 2,3,4,7,9
7th- #4Rule By Night is a lot better than he showed last time. Asmussen isn't really known for having them cranked off the bench and he ran like a horse that needed the race. He might even offer a decent price with the presence of the entry and Trappe Shot.
Play- Win bet #4
Double- 4 with 2,5,6
Pick 3 4 with 2,5,6 with 1,2,5,6
8th- Very strong edition of this race and it all boils down to Travelin Man and which one shows up. I think he's vulnerable in here and will be trying to beat him. #2 Justin Phillip gets one more shot. Had some traffic two back and probably moved too early last time, when he looked home free, only to fold up late. I think this is the right distance, he should be in a nice tracking spot right behind the speed and ran arguably his best race at Belmont. Also using #5 Arch Traveller, who was impressive visually last time, although he had a perfect trip and he's coming along nicely and #6 Little Drama who comes into this fresh off his win at Parx last out and looks to turn the tables on Travelin Man.
Play- Win on #2
Exacta- 2,5,6 with 2,5,6,7
.50 pick 4
2,5,6 // 1,2,5,6 // 5,6,7 // 6,9,12
9th- Another fantastic betting race, where almost all can win. I'm using #1 Gypsy's Warning, #2 Aviate, #5 Strike The Bell and #6 Fantasia. Gypsy's Warning seems like a wiseguy horse based on a lot of the chatter I'm reading, but her best could win this. Aviate was impressive last time and can easily repeat. Fantasia had a little traffic last time, but she doesn't like to win and Strike The Bell should have gotten a lot out of her last and is capable of upsetting on her best day.
Play- Win #5
Exacta- 1,2,5,6 box
10th- I really respect Gio Ponti, but I think he can be beat here and I'm going to try. Both #5 Al Khali and #7 Prince Will I am had no shot last time when Get Stormy was allowed an easy lead. They should get more pace in here and both can make amends for last time. #6 Viscount Nelson shows up in NY after winning 8 days ago at the Curragh. Gets lasix and was only a length behind Twice Over at this distance in Europe last year.
Play- Win #5
Double- 5,6,7 with 6,9,12
11th- Already been talked about a lot, but I think the race boils down to Nehro, Animal Kingdom and Shackleford. I was really impressed with the way Shackleford responded last time and in hindsight his Derby was better than it looked on paper. Nehro has had his chances and come up short, but I feel like he's the grinding type that does well in the Belmont and comes in fresh. Animal Kingdom has done nothing wrong in his career and is a deserving favorite.
Play- Exacta 6 with 5,9,10,12
Win- #6
Super-
9 / 5,6,12 / 5,6,10,12 / 1,5,6,10,12
12th- Fading fast here, so...
Plays- Win #1 Scorper
Exacta box- 1,3,7
Double- 1,3,7 with 1
13th- Win #1 Turn Up the Music
Exacta- all with 1
Good luck and enjoy a great day of racing
