Anyone here eat Chia seeds? Yes? No? What?

Just reading about this tribe of stone age ultra marathon runners in the backwaters of Mexico, they live on Chia seeds.

The same thing we slather on ceramic Chia Obamas to grow the green Afro

Turns out they are a super food, rich in Omega oils, protein, fiber, calcium. Much like flax, but without the issue of dealing with flaxs hard outer shell -- chias dont need to be cracked or ground up before consuming.

I was on a chia kick for about a year, literally downing an ounce in the morning and one at night with a glass of water. The reason I started doing it was because I read about a blood test to find out your omega 3 index. The omega 3 index measures the amount of EPA and DHA in your red blood cells. This index is strongly correlated to your risk of sudden cardiac death and coronary heart disease. (probably more so than cholesterol)

I stopped because I found out that chia is mostly ALA that your body needs to convert to EPA and DHA. According to this link the conversion is minimal.

Fish oil supplements seem to be the best way to increase your omega 3 index.

You're right about not needing to grind chia. Plus chia won't go rancid like flax will. The one negative is chia is more expensive, but their nutritional profiles are fairly similar. I was never crazy about the taste of flax, but chia is pretty neutral. Feels like eating poppy seeds.
