Happy retirement to you, Brass Hat.
Brass Hat, the venerable gelding who earned nearly $2.2 million while becoming a sentimental favorite of racing fans in Kentucky and beyond, has been retired at age 10, it was announced Tuesday morning by owner-breeder Fred Bradley and his son, trainer Buff Bradley.

I'll always remember the day he set the track record for 8.5f at CD. Didn't think he had it in him coming off the yearlong layoff.

Same here. A nice horse who rarely ran a bad race (except at Saratoga); one of my favorites. I loved his race in the Donn when he circled the field and won going away. I told a guy we know at Suffolk before the MassCap that he was a favorite of mine, and Buff invited my wife and I to the barn the Friday before the race to see him and take pictures of him. Buff, his father, and the handlers seemed to be very nice people. I hope Buff comes up with another horse like him in the future.
