Do away with the pick-6 and replace it with a pick-5. Takeout should be as low as possible,5% or 10%.

The handle for the pick-5 will Immediately be 5 times greater than the pick6.

Handle on every race in the pk-5 will increase.

Something most Horseplayer would approve of and more profit for NYRA.

What do you say?

Usually, scratches are up by 1:15. I keep looking and Friday's changes are still there.

I think that you mean 11:15.

We'll just have to wait for the show and try to keep up with Durkin while he rattles off the scratches.

Now the web version of NYRA Rewards is down, I had to call them on the phone to make a wager.

It was a win bet on the 3 in the third race at Belmont, let's see if it was worth the extra effort.

What do you say?

In March of 2009, I sent a 9 page letter with accompanying Excel spreadsheets to Charlie & Hal at NYRA in advocating a 50 cent Pick 4, 50 cent Pick 5, and a Place Pick All (See my post about Monmouth's new 50 cent Place Pick 6)

After a year went by, the decision came back that they were not going to make any changes to their wagering menu. Go figure.

I think with Calder & Hollywood recently rolling out new 50 cent Pick 5's and following Gulfstream's 1,2 punch of a 50 cent Pick 5 and Rainbow 6, and the great business those bets helped GP generate, NYRA basically had no choice on their recent decision to finally lower their Pick 4 minimum to 50 cents unless they wanted their wagering menu to look completely obsolete and appear to be totally unresponsive to their customers as to what's going on in the world of pari-mutuels.

Adjusting takeout rates is not as simple as people think. I know I thought it was easy but it isn't becaue there are too many people with veto power in the equation. It's a complicated issue for several reasons but from what I know nobody will go below 12% right now. Somewhere between 14% and 18% is more realistic at this time.

Having said that each state has different things going on so doing something in one State doesn't mean that it will succeed in another State.

I think almost every track that has a pick 6 should scrap it for a 50 cent pick 5.
California is the only jurisdiction that does any good with it anyway.

I do think that the Beulah type jackpot bet though is worthwhile as it can appeal to the lottery crowd if it gets up high enough. I would make a mandatory payoff more frequent, like once a month or every two weeks.

I also don't think takeout is main motivation on Pick 5's. I'd rather see reduced takeout on exactors, doubles, and pick 3's than Pick 5's, as those bets are responsible for a lot more churn.

And superfectas should not be available in races with less than 8 starters, but that is another story.
