Several states are considering bills that would make it a felony for journalists to carry out undercover investigations of agribusiness operations. In Minnesota there is legislation pending that make felons of people who pose as workers and record the inhumane treatment of animals. It would also criminalize the distribution of those videos.

The Iowa House and Senate have approved a bill to punish agribusiness whistleblowers and investigative reporters who take jobs for the purpose of reporting abuses. If convicted, "those types of whistleblowers" could face five years in prison. The bill's sponsor says the intention is to encourage people to report abuses. HUH?

There is a bill in the criminal justice committee of the Florida state senate that makes it a first-degree felony to photograph factory farms and puppy mills without written permission from the owner. The penalty for a first-degree felony conviction in Florida can be up to 30 years in prison. WOW! Thirty years for an unauthorized farmyard photo!!
