11 races - 89 horses with 5 of the 11 races NJ Breds

Noted that Mike Luzzi has a handful of mounts as Eddie Castro is staying at Belmont from what i read. Bravo should have a big year now.

Nothing says "Monmouth" more than the appearance of Herculon in another state bred maiden race. I'm shocked he's only had 13 races. It seemed like every time I play Mth I say that horse in the entries.

Without the additonal funds that the Governor vetoed, It looks like it's gonna be a long meet. There won't be as many NY or Philly shippers like last yr. 2010 was the first yr i bet Monmouth in almost a decade. It looks like it will also be the last.

The month of August will be a decent one entry wise, Parx closes for the month!

Time will tell, however its not a good sign that there isnot a signed lease with Morris Bailey yet Certainly won't be like last year

Deals reached to lease NJ horse racing tracks to private management
Posted on May 12, 2011 by Bob Jordan Gov. Chris Christie approved landmark deals Thursday that will turn the state-owned Monmouth Park and Meadowlands Racetrack over to private management. The lease of Monmouth Park hinges on approval of the association representing thoroughbred horsemen, which new operator Morris Bailey will seek next week.
The leases that will go to Bailey at the Monmouth track and Jeffrey Gural at the Meadowlands could bring a close to a period of uncertainty for the racing sport. Both tracks have been money-losers in recent years. Christie had threatened to shut the Meadowlands down if a private operator couldn’t be found, saying the track shouldn’t be sustained by taxpayers.
But Gural plans to build a cost-efficient grandstand to replace an outdated structure and also has been given permission by the state to development an off-track wagering site in Bayonne, steps that could help harness racing to operate in the black.

Can somebody explain why Monmouth is not using it's turf course Saturday?

No rain in Jersey for almost a week. The track's very existence was/is in doubt.

But save the turf course.

Not for nothing but Garden State saved it's turf course until the bitter end too. Now there is not even weeds.

It is now time for the gamblers and horsemen in NJ to stand up and make these tracks work. We will now find out whether they really want horse racing there or whether it is being used as an excuse to get expanded slots. I wish the new operators all the best.

There were no grass races in the book for this weekend or I think next weekend. This is typical for Monmouth. I don't really understand it either given they are running only 71 days Fri-Sun, but they never run grass races for the first few weekends.

Likely as it has always been following the 6 days on the turf at AC.

Its correct there were no grass races in the book for the first weekend, however there are 2 grass races in the book for the 21st and 2 for the 22nd.

ok good I didn't go back to check. As a side note, they closed the free parking lot and raised general parking to $3 and preferred to $5. Brilliant!

In all sincerity, I don't mind paying extra for something I really enjoy. If it helps make Monmouth worthwhile to operate, I'll happily pay the increase in parking on my way inside.

Name another venue as enjoyable as an afternoon at Monmouth that costs less than $10 to park and enter combined?

P.S. Increasing takeout is another story!

There's the Cabaret Go-Go bar down the road a bit from Monmouth...free parking, free entry. ;)

tis is precisely where racing shoots itself in the foot. it should be free parking and admission especially wit gas prices.

how much does it cost to fire up a computer and bet another track with another entity from home ?

If you bet enough you can overcome fixed costs like parking, but overcoming high takeout rates is another matter. That said, I hate being down 10-20 bucks before I make my first bet. I do not consider horse racing entertainment. To do so says I expect to lose. I bet the horses to make money. I think that is the way most handicappers look it whether they actually do or not. If I want to be entertained, I'd go to a coffee shop on a Saturday night and listen to a folk singer.

This kind of idiocy has Lennon Register's fingerprints all over it.

If it isn't bad enough the guy knows nothing about racing, he apparently knows nothing about business either. He's never seen a fee or charge he didn't like.... or a cut in services.

Just the kind of guy you figure would be elevated to VP of operations at a govt. agency.

PS: He got the appointment courtesy of his old pal Hal Handel, another know-nothing political hack.

And people wonder why NJ racing is in the sad shape it is.....

You know as NJ Stinks said it isn't going to kill me, but the principle of charging more for a lesser product is troubling. Also, those of us at the track that actually play always say they should raise the prices on the freeloaders that sit in the picnic area and take up space. I asked for a parking pass (I already get admission) and people that play should get the freebies just like at the casinos. I think they should charge $10 to get in, but for every $100 you bet you get two free admissions or something. Pretty easy to do right? Oh no, it isn't. You have to go all the way to the friggin Clubhouse to sign up for Big M rewards. They should have a place to do it by the windows and right when you walk in. God knows they put enough other bullshit near the admission gates many days.

Just noticed this.

Starting in the 4 th race, a 50 cent place pick 6. Wonder what the pool size will be on this one as it has not been publicized . Maybe i'll play it for a few bucks.

Also Keith Jones has a horse in the 7th race #2 All of the Above

The racing date calendar seems to have disappeared from the website. As of last week it was still showing 5 days per week after Memorial Day weekend.

But the 3 day/wk schedule, as alhattab has said, seems to be the conventional wisdom.

Looks like they added one more fenced-in area down the stretch a bit. I'll be out there today looking forward to it. Card isn't great but it's Opening Day who cares

I'd go to a coffee shop on a Saturday night and listen to a folk singer.

TT: Mr. Van Ronk, do you remember Bob "Le Flambeur" Goren ?

DVR: He ... was a friend of mine.

TT: Mr. Guthrie, Bobby Goren ? Any memories ?

AG: Yeah, man. Like ... wow, man. Couldjew like ... repeat the question, man ?

TT: Miss Baez, can you tell us about "Rapid" Robert Goren ?

JB: He was always in the front row at the Patchouli Palace. I saw him once at the Eyegot-au-Go-Go. I thought I had a shot with him, but the chicklets were all over him. He looked just like Vinnie D'Onofrio, ya know ?

Looks like the deal is done. This piece from NJ.com is light on details but says deal is done. Last I heard was something like $400k/day for first 5 years, then $500k/day for next 5 and $600k/day for next 5. This was all scuttlebut around the racetrack I'm not in the know.
