Two questions:

What does "Run-up: 34 feet" mean?

Where did the extra $171,800 in purse money come from? Is it from horses that weren't TC nominated and had to pay additional entry fees?

The beam to start the timer is 34 feet for the gate - they "run up" 34 feet before the timing starts. the longer the run up, the faster the first fractions will be, as the horseys are running faster.

At GP one mile, the run up is 0 , so the first fractions appear to be very slow.

So are they really running a mile and a quarter + 34 feet? Or are they running a mile and a quarter and not getting timed for the first 34 feet of it? Just curious...

So are they really running a mile and a quarter + 34 feet is correct.

Quarterhorses are timed from the gate, Thoroughbreds are not.

Is 34 feet pretty typical?

Depending on Track layout and distance, every race may have a different run up. Normally Oaklawn Park is 50ft for all races except 5 1/2 furlongs = 40ft. The first horse to break the beam starts the timer. again the first horse to break the beam at every point determines the time for that quarter which has been raced.

As far as distance, I don't think those run up distances are considered. Not certain on that. Others may correct me if I'm wrong.

2005 & 2009 ensured we won't see another 100-1 horse in the DERBY for a long long long time because so many people are willing to take shots at the longest of longshots after seeing what happened those two years.
