printer light blinks but printer does not work-checked for paper jam etc--do usb
cables go bad ?

Can you do a test print right from the printer itself? If so then try the basics, unplug printer from PC, reboot printer and PC, plug printer back in.

If the printer works then you can try a different USB port on your computer. Uninstall and reinstall the software. A bad cable is a possibility if nothing else works.
