With all the attention lately about medications, does anybody remember if Affirmed, the last Triple Crown winner was on Lasix or other drugs?

Could this be another reason we haven't had a Triple Crown winner since 1978?

Until 1995 NY had no lasix on race day, so the Belmont would have been run without Lasix for Affirmed.

Now, the question arises, how have the times in the Belmont changed, if they did change, with the use of Lasix?

I'm going to have to look that up.

jon white was just commenting the other day that in glancing at belmont's track records in the DRF, secretariat and man o war still hold records there. his point was that those are pretty impressive from a longevity standpoint, and although i don't remember the distances involved, they were not some weird distance they never run anymore. one was at 1-1/8 mi.

In the days before lasix when I was on the backside,I remember horses getting lasix the day before and water and hay being drawn 24 hours before a race.Lots of horse did and still do wear muzzles 12 hours before a race. whether there was a test for it in them days is unknow to me.So yes he could have been on lasix. If he was allowed to have it then yes I would think he was on it.

Interesting numbers when looked at:

Pre Lasix

1970-1980 1981-1990 1991-1995
Times Horses Horses Horses
2:24 1 0 0
2:26 1 2 2
2:27 0 4 0
2:28 3 2 1
2:29 4 3 1
2:30+ 2 0 0

Post Lasix
1996-2000 2001-2010
Times Horses Horses
2:26 0 1
2:27 1 5
2:28 2 3
2:29 1 2
2:30+ 1 2

So, no real appreciable improvement, and in fact you can almost argue the fact that the horses have gotten a bit slower if anything. Only one horse turning in a 2:26 time in 15 years and that was in 2001 with Point Given. When you look at the pre-lasix era 5 horses came in 2:26 and change.

Makes you think.......

Secretariat still holds the Belmont Park track records for both 1-1/8 miles (1:45.2)(the 1973 Marlboro Cup) and 1-1/2 miles (2:24)(the 1973 Belmont Stakes). Man o'War's record was also set in the Belmont Stakes (1920), which was run at 1-3/8 miles that year (2:14.1).

To answer your question directly....I see no connection between the two, whatsoever.
