Val 3

I have been using Sartin's products sucessfully and was a subscriber to his journals. Even went to visit him just before he became ill. He told me that he was working on, and about to release Val 3 which would be more user friendly. I somehow fell through the crack and didn't receive any notification of the new Val 3 or anything else correspondence wise. I would like to know if I can purchase Val 3. Anybody know??

Hi,
Has anyone ever called this number and ever gotten anything more then a busy signal. Sent a e-mail and received a reply. It is oblivious that she was very well trained by Howard. To send 185.00 to a PO Box, knowing that all support, as oxymoronic as that sounds for the program goes away in a few months. I checked with Trackmaster and was advised that they do not support any third party software.

CALLED THE NUMBER LAST (MONDAY) AND SPOKE WITH ALINE. SHE SAID SHE IS THERE MONDAY AND FRIDAY FROM NOON TO 4PM PACIFIC TIME. HOWEVER THE NUMBER WAS BUSY ALL DAY YESTERDAY SO I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM. SEEMS TO ME SHE IS BASICALLY A 1 WOMAN SHOW RIGHT NOW SO MAYBE SHE WAS JUST REAL BUSY. TRACKMASTER FILES DO WORK ON VALIDATOR, VAL2, AND VAL3. SOME PEOPLE ALSO HAVE SYNTHESIS PROGRAMS THAT WORK WITH TRKMAST WHILE OTHERS WITH SYNT WONT WORK. HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE REDHORSE! I have a few questions in regards to using VAL2:

1) In regards to pacelines, is there any way to set it to automatically pick pacelines?

2) Which calculations have you found best to work at the track? The Validator, the oddsline?

3) (Still have the printing problem with XP)

Thanks in advance..

I usually use my laptop, which has the XP operating system, to run Val2. I use my laptop because I can sit in my recliner in the bedroom while my wife channel surfs and I can be with her. I have a HP 930 printer that us fairly compact and fits under the nightstand. It prints fairly well although it could be better. I like to print one race to a page and sometimes that does not happen and I get part of it on the next page.

In one of Sartin's journals he listed several printers that worked well with the program. I'll find it and post the list. Before I started using the HP930 I was using a Panosonic dot matrix with Windows 98 that actually worked better than the HP does now.

Printing with the program is a bear and I'm hoping it was improved.

HERE ARE A FEW THOUGHTS ON USING VAL2

1) WHEN PICKING PACELINES ENTER ALL 3 LINES THAT" YOU "FEEL ARE THE BEST OF THE LAST 3 COMPARABLE.THEN HIT F6 AND TO THE RIGHT YOU WILL SEE THE LINE THAT THE MACHINE LIKES RANKED#1. KEEP THAT LINE AND REMOVE THE OTHER 2.IN CASE OF TIES FOR 1 LEAVE THEM IN REMOVE THE OTHER 1 THAT IS NOT TIED. NOW GO TO THE PRIMARY FACTORS SCREEN AND CHOOSE THE LINE WITH THE LOWEST LINE SCORE TO THE RIGHT.IF THERE IS STILL A TIE TAKE THE LINE WITH THE BEST TOTAL ENERGY RANK.IN PUBLISHED WINNING RACES IN THE FOLLOWUP THERE ARE VERY FEW TIMES WHEN THE LINE SELECTED IS NOT IN THE LAST 3.REASONS TO GO BACK 4 OR EVEN 5 SHOULD BE BECAUSE OF NON COMPARABLE LINE IN TOP 3(TURF LINE IN DIRT RACE, ROUTE LINE IN SPRINT AND VICE VERSA,IF LAST LINE OR 2 BACK WAS A RACE GOING INTO OR RETURNING FROM A LAYOFF, IF THE CLASS OF THE LINE IN THE LAST 3 IS WAY ABOVE WHAT HE IS FACING TODAY,ETC)

2)NOW THAT YOU HAVE LINES SELECTED LOOK AT THE HORSE WITH THE TOP SPEED RATING. SAY IT IS A 90. IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE THAT THAT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT HE WILL DO SET A RANGE OF 6 POINTS BELOW THAT 90 (90-84) AND REMOVE ALL HORSES REGARDLESS OF THEIR RANKINGS THAT HAVE A SPEED RATING OF LESS THAN 84.NOT DOING THIS WILL GIVE A LOT OF FALSE READS AND ALSO GIVE YOU A CLEAR PICTURE OF THE TRUE CONTENDERS IN THE RACE. A LOT OF PEOPLE I SEE USING THE PROGRAM FAIL TO DO THIS AND THIS WAS A MAJOR INSTRUCTION FROM THE DOC. HE DID THIS ALL THE TIME!

3)NOW REDUCE TO TOP 5 CONTENDERS IF THE RANGE HAS NOT ALREADY DONE THAT AND GO TO THE VALIDATOR SCREEN. IF YOU ARE WIN BETTING AND HAVE A MINIMUM PRICE THAT YOU WILL BET AT HIDE ANY HORSE THAT DOES NOT MEET YOUR MINIMUM REQUIREMENT! (ASSUMING YOU ARE GOING TO PLAY THE RACE).ALSO YOU SGOULD BE PREPARED TO BET ANY HORSE THAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT. IF IN CHOOSING LINES FOR 1 REASON OR ANOTHER YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT GONNA BET A CERTAIN HORSE DO NOT PUT HIM IN YOUR READOUTS!

I KNOW I MIGHT HAVE WRIITEN TOO MUCH BUT THESE ARE SOLID GUIDELINES TO USE VAL 2. I WILL PM YOU WITH SOME GUIDELINES ON USING THE EARLY/LATE GRAPH WHICH IS THE MOST UNREAL TOOL TO USE IF YOU PLAY EXACTAS !!! AND THE BEST PART IS IT HASNT BEEN DUPLICATED BY ALL THE COPYCATS OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES!!!! RICHIE :)

Sq, Val 2 will not automatically pick the paceline. You must do that yourself. Richie(Shanta)gave some great tips.

Richie, thanks

2 more questions

1) What tracks have you found that VAL2 works best at,

2) I do like to play exotics, so which function do you suggest for those? The oddsline or the graphs?

I would be interested in your take on using the E/L graphs as I still struggle with them on exactas and tris. I have had good results with using the counter energy horse, but for win only.

Your info on the SR was right on! Once you start using that first, then the other ratings it becomes more apparent and greatly improves your W %.

As to breaking ties, if you are a 2 horse bettor, betting the low odds and high odds, after hiding the less than acceptable odds takes care of the ties.

For me the Early/ late graph is the best tool for
final decsion making I try to use it to eliminate horses
that use to much of there total energy too early
for a Win only wagerer I love when a short price horse that's not a top 3 total energy horse is over 15 or so on the early side
i WILL BET AGAINST THESE ALL THE TIME
I wager at only 1 track so I have a fairly good Idea of what wins at each distance . It replaces the old modeling method
When working races with Doc Sartin, He would check
it to find counter energy horses . But He always considered
the total energy .. I rembember his reply's when a horse I considered too early or too late would win .... And I asked why
he would just say check the Total Energy... Thats why he put it on that screen too
Its pretty easy to get an idea about what wins
Just enter some pacelines for a few hoses when they run the best and note the distance then check the #4 screen and you will see the consistancy of the lines
I have the best results in sprint races With horses who run too early or late And turf races.. Anything on the early side is in trouble . Distance races are a little tricky as the better lines
for Routes have a bigger range. But basically the center line is Ideal

I MULTI TRACK SQ. OF THE TRACKS RUNNING RIGHT NOW THESE ARE THE ONES THAT ARE VERY PLAYABLE IN MY OPINION.

1)CHURCHILL

2)HAWTHORNE

3)FINGER LAKES

4)HOOSIER

5)WOODBINE
I DONT PLAY SO CAL OR NEW YORK THAT MUCH BUT KNOW A COUPLE OF PEOPLE THAT DO AND THEY SAY THEY ARE FINE ALSO.

AS FAR AS PLAYING EXACTAS(TRIFECTAS I HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT!)TRY THIS ON PAPER FIRST BEFORE YOU START WAGERING:MAKE 3 HORSE EXACTA BOXES(DOCS PRESCRIBED WAY OF WAGERING) GO TO THE EARLY LATE GRAPH AND MAKE SURE THAT 1 OF THE 3 HORSES IN THE BOX IS COUNTER ENERGY(YOU WILL SEE IT)THE HORSE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE GRAPH TO BE COUNTER ENERGY(EXAMPLE-4 OF THE 5 CONTENDERS ON THE GRAPH ARE PLUS 20 ON THE EARLY SIDE-THE 5TH ONE IS PLUS 5-THAT 5TH HORSE IS THE COUNTER ENERGY HORSE). also if you have hidden the fav in a race to make your win bets(2 horses to win is the way we wager in every race!)for exactas you want to recall him and check his readouts on the graph. that is called a before hides readout. try this for 2 20 race cycles without wagering at first sq.this will enable you to absorb everything you are seeing without blowing a gasket over a tough beat or some other bad head that happens!(i have first hand experience of this!)also during these 40 races you will start to see patterns happening. the best is if you have a printer to print the e/l graph print out the before hides readout and just put a w next to the winners line on the graph along with the win price and if you see the place horse in your readouts mark a p next to his line on the graph. also write down on that page the exacta payoff. i hope this helps sq please let me know how it goes after a week or 2 ok???

also keep track of where your winners are coming from on the validator screen if you can do this also for the 40 races that would be great! remember to hide the horse with odds too low to bet on first! then keep track of the winners from this readout(this is called the after hides readout) if the low odds horse wins recall him and write down his win price from what tier he was in before you hid him.

do not enter a line if the beaten lenghts at the finish is more than 7.5 lenghts.(docs instruction-'NEVER")

RICHIE :)

What I do is copy/paste from the DOS screen to a text editor. I have both VAL2 and the editor running and I just ALT-Tab (toggle) betwen the 2 after the copy.
The mechanics of copying the screen are easy. Click with the mouse in the upper left corner of the DOS sreen. You will see a yellow (or possibly white) block 1 character wide and high. Click and Hold on the block and move the mouse to the lower right corner of the DOS screen (or to a point where the highlighted portion of the screen contains the information you want). Then press the Enter key. This copies the data from the screen to the Windoze clipboard.
Toggle to (or start up) your text editor or word processor (Notepad or Wordpad is fine) and press Control-V (or select Edit | Paste in the editor). The contents of the DOS screen will be pasted into the editor.
I keep this up until I have a full card and then print it out.
I use a text editor called Ultra-Edit. I add page breaks between races to make it easier to read. You may find that printing every race is easier. This also works for Windoze 2000.

... OR ...

Connect a printer that will work with both DOS and Windoze. I use an old HP Deskjet 340 (use the 'monochrome' driver) and it also works pretty well.
Salt to taste.

I use the Validator to do my contender selection.
If I have selected 2 or more lines for any horse I go through these first and remove the one(s) that show up worst on V/DC-T. In the case of ties, I make my own quick line score of the EP-R, LP-R, CP-R, HE-R and FX-R and remove the highest number. If still tied I go to the BL-BL screen and remove the line that has the lowest total LS.
I then hide the worst V/DC horses, one at a time. This way the Validator recalculates after every hide. This sometimes moves horses up farther than I would have guessed, but not often.
Once I get it down to 4 (or 5 with ties) I go to the BL-BL screen and basically wager on any remaining 4 horse that has ODDS of 5/2 or less (3/1 with 5 horses) and I require them to be twice these odds (or close) to be a wager. For exactas I take my two win wagers over top of the other three (6 bets). I also make a mental note of horses that rank better on V/DC than BL-BL and vice-versa. I trust the Validator more (just personal opinion) but, again, this doesn't happen too often.
I don't hide low odds horses in this situation because, even though I won't bet them, I may include them in the exotics.

As always, salt to taste.

As for Shanta's track list, I agree with them (except I haven't handicapped HOO) and I would add Calder (especially turf races), Bay Muddows, Arlington and Aqueduct. I have a mental block about Belmont, Hollywood and Gulfstream, but I think that's just me. ;)

Red, I do the same, sort of..

I copy and paste the odds screen (option 6) into Word and just print out the whole card.. Its not that much work.

I got hold of Aline Best on the phone today. She confirmed all the previous posts, and said it will be selling til at least the end of the year, with technical support til next March.

A new screen with jockey/trainer stats and earnings per start on the menu rather than having to go back to the pace lines. Supplementary corallaries and a few other things on the Primary corollary screen. More print options & enhancements, but its still a DOS program and prints directly to lpt1, so that won;t help you USB folks.

She said it is definitely an upgrade, not a major revision. The only real difference she mentioned was that Doc had done a tweak to the Validator formula again, like he did between 1 & 2, but said she had no idea what he'd done.

Please keep the Validator discussion going, especially the E/L graph. I'm a win bettor only, and havn't really gotten down how much help it can be in win betting. I know Sartin used to say he could go to the otb with just the page that had the Validator and E/L graph on it.

Hi. Thanks for sharing your method
I use the 3 screen and work down to
the top 5 line score and top 5 total energy
After I pick my lines. If I use the F6 PI button and get a tie I
keep them both in .. I then hide down to
the top 5 L.S. too
Another thing I've been doing for a while is
If I have a horse with 2 lines . lets say 1 line is ranked 4
and 1 is ranked 5 I will still hide the other higher ranked horses
first. The thing I want to do is hide the lines that are the worst
of the Primary Line score till its down to the horse with
the 2 lines. Then I hide the line that ranked worse of the 2
This method will only really help you if you just bet to win
since I'm betting to win, It works well
Thanks for the advice

I actually like it when this happens.
It means the horse can consistently reproduce a similar race.
Thanks for reminding me about screen 3. I used to use it with Thoromation (I think) but dropped it in favor of the Validator screen when it became available. I'm going to give it a second look.

Dear Red
Glad I was able to remind you and maybe some others too
of the 3 screen
One other note about the 3 screen . When I visited Doc
we spent a full day working races on his computer
We did about 5 races. He just wanted me to do them in a
consistant method He showed me some things about
picking pacelines and the internal fractions like the speed of the 2nd call. But really it was all about using the program the way he
did He had me pick my lines use the F6 PI button
and use the 3 screen to hide down to the top 5 Primary
line score and top 5 Total Energy I remember this because
Doc had a special version of Val2 made for him to use. and on the 3 screen
all that was on it was the Total Energy rankings on the left
and the Primary line score totals to the right
Thats it. There were no other readouts He said thats all he need
to know So I always hide down with the 3 screen
Then we talked about working one track or multi track betting
He knew I only worked races from PHA
He suggested If I was going to bet only one track, To bet 60/40
So I could ride out days when the favorites dominate He also said
to use the E/L graph to see were the winners ranked By distance. He then asked me to keep a record of what the winner paid . This was a huge help He said "If you do this you will get a feeling
about the horses You will know that they win and pay well
on certain places on the graph" He was right
It really doesn't take to long do this About 20 races from one track
will show a good pattern

Now this is odd.. I tried Val2 on my desktop and it prints fine on my Brother copier/fax.. This uses a USB cable, while my laptop uses a printer cable..

I am thinking its just hit or miss on the type of printer you have.
