Most of these issues were covered in a recent thread.

Computer (brand, model, OS, memory and more), monitor (brand and model) and video card stats (brand and model) would benefit greatly.

Did you recently add another software and/or OS update that could have caused this?

Try booting your computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking if you see that option, so you can check it out further. Is it a laptop? Could try moving the screen forward or backword a bit to see if that connection is poor...this happened to me on two laptops now. They are too old to invest money in so I just fuss with the screen until I get the sweet spot!

the computer is a compaq presario about 5 years old. the monitor is 24 in hanspree. I don't know anything about the video cards. I know it time for new one, but this not good time for me to go shopping. no money, very bad health.

Do you actually see the windows desktop appear, and THEN everything goes blank...or do you only see the regular boot-up messages, and then nothing....

Do you see the boot up sequence before Windows starts up?

Here's a few on ebay that's less than $15 shipped to your door. A little hard without knowing the model number.

Boot it up holding F8. Select VGA mode.

What version of windows are you using?

Google desktop disappears after boot up

There seems to be quite a few pages with this problem...your solution might be found on one of them...

windows XP. I tried it in safe mode. It goes blank there too. Is there any chance that it is the monitor?

It could be a setting on the monitor, yeah...mine will not display if it is set to analog, due to the fact that its plugged into digital. Vice-versa wouldn't work either.
