I thought this was more interesting, because of the debate in the comments about pro and negative para mutual wagering.

The French PMU sounds to be re-energised from a little competition. Well done.
Very good for owners, trainers and the Government, but 25% take out from the backers is not likely to be sustainable when it is less than 5% with UK Betfair.
Possibly the French backers are still brainwashed into accepting bad value as the norm?

The lion's share of wagering handle in France doesn't come from your usual grind like here, it comes from the lone Quinté race; one race per day offers a Tiercé (Trifecta), Quarté (Superfecta), and the big one is the Quinté (Super High Five), with a jackpot provision which starts at 1,000,000€. The Quinté is popular because it offers you the chance to become rich, plus (unlike the High Five here) it offers consolation payouts for all five in the wrong order, first 4, 4 out of the 5, and first 3. If nobody hits the first 5 in order, then that part of the pool is paid out on tickets with all 5 in the wrong order.
95% of the newspapers in France have past performances for the Quinté race, so I don't believe that's something that Betfair can compete with.

The French banned Betfair some time ago (May 2010 to be exact).

On 6 April the French parliament passed a law relating to online gaming which came into effect on the 13th May, 2010. This law prevents us from allowing customers to access www.betfair.com and associated sites from France. We are considering our options for the future but in the meantime, as a result of this change in legislation, we can no longer accept bets from France or any of its territories. Please note that this restriction also applies to customers that may have accounts registered in a different location but attempt to use their Betfair account whilst they are visiting France.

"The French banned Betfair some time ago (May 2010 to be exact)."
