I always liked Robbie Davis . He was so terribly haunted by the unfortunate
death of Mike Venezia , the veteran NY jockey.
Davis could clear his horse from the fallen rider and it was no fault of his
own but it changed his life forever , he left , came back but things were
never the same .
He will always be cheering his daughter Jackie on althoughhe was against her riding at first , he realized this is her dream.

I wanted to add a who are not mentioned often.

Don Macbeth , was riding when I first made my trip to the tracks , but shortly after succombed to cancer way too young.
I will always remember him as a class act , a leader and gentlemen .

Sam Maple , who seemed always in Eddie's shadows was doing a great job at the big M , as honest as they come also was taken too young .

I believe Jeffrey Fell is still around , but it's tough to get any recent take on him.
I thought he did a great job in NY up against the best in the country.
I believe he left for Canada and came back in the nineties , but things were
never the same. Being named in the lawsuit with NYRA in Ron Turcotte's
spill had to be huge baggage .
There were rumors that he was broke , cannot confirm though.

Gregg was a trainer for quite a while after he retired from riding in the early 90's. I don't think he trains race horses anymore but handles non-racing horses at a facility in Mt. Airy, Md.

He's also the father of Matt McCarron, a well known steeplechase jockey. Matt and I went to the same highschool for freshman and sophomore years.

A book has been, recently, been written by Bill Heller about Jose, it was released a few weeks ago, Above It All: The Turbulent Life Of Jose Santos. http://www.josesantosbook.com/index.html

Randy Romero was, as many recall, inducted into the Hall Of Fame last summer. He, if I recall, has endured monumental health problems. Bill Heller has written a book about Randy as well, Randy Romero's Remarkable Ride.

Jacinto Vasquez, another Hall Of Famer, trains in Florida--have been seeing his name in the entries for years, apparently, too, at 67 he still works a horse, now and then. This is amazing; good for him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbNzE0qS0PU

J.T.Lundy, at present--who knows? Though released from prison in 2005, this Hall Of Hell member remained on probation until 2008. He has been seen on the grounds at the Keeneland sales, according to a small blurb at BloodHorse. I might have some reservations about having this man buying horses for me, or being around any horse I owned. He may have better luck pitching infomercials--late night.

One can find a world of info via Google.

By mid-October of most years, a person can draw up a relatively small list of horses, study their past performances and with some certainty pick the Horse of the Year. Quite obviously, 1983 is not an ordinary year. Each major race seems to produce a different winner—Sunny's Halo, Play Fellow, Slew o' Gold, Bates Motel, to name a few—casting more shadow than light on the situation and confusing everyone who tries to make an assessment of this year's runners. Should the trend continue—and nobody doubts that it will—the outstanding horse of 1983 could emerge from a very unlikely class: the 2-year-olds.

This Saturday afternoon the nation's racing fans will get their first televised look at one of the two outstanding 2-year-old candidates when Devil's Bag, undefeated in three races, runs in the $200,000 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Belmont_Park_Raceway/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm), which is just before the $500,000 Jockey Club (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/The_Jockey_Club/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) Gold Cup. As recently as two weeks ago, 38 2-year-olds had been nominated to the Champagne, but the presence of Devil's Bag will scare most of them away, and only half a dozen are expected to start in New York (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/New_York/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm)'s most important race for young horses.

Since 1936, when Granville (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Granville/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) was named racing's first Horse of the Year, only one 2-year-old has won the award: Secretariat in 1972. Why are 2-year-olds so rarely honored? Mainly because they race only against other 2-year-olds. For Devil's Bag to attain this year's award he will not only have to win the Champagne in impressive style, he will probably have to win at least two other major races as well, e.g., the Laurel Futurity on Oct. 29 and the Remsen on Nov. 12.

A further obstacle to Devil's Bag is another smashing 2-year-old who has outstanding credentials—a filly named Althea whose sire is Alydar. The two probably won't meet this year. Althea has won four races in five starts, including California (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/California/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm)'s two most important 2-year-old races, the Hollywood (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Hollywood/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) Juvenile Championship and the Del Mar (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Del_Mar/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) Futurity. Not only did Althea win those races by a total of 16 lengths in very fast times, but she beat colts in both. After the Del Mar (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Del_Mar/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) Futurity, Althea's trainer, D. Wayne Lukas (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/D_Wayne_Lukas/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm), said, "You now have to include Althea in the outer circle among fillies." Lukas' circle includes the great fillies Landaluce and Ruffian. Lukas, it should be remembered, also trained Landaluce.

Listen now to what Woody Stephens (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Woody_Stephens/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm), who trains Devil's Bag, had to say after the colt easily won the seven-furlong, $84,450 Cowdin Stakes at Belmont Park (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Belmont_Park_Raceway/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) on Sept. 28: "I've been around racing for 51 years and I've never seen a 2-year-old run a 1:21[2/5]. And Eddie [jockey Eddie Maple (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Eddie_Maple/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm)] was all wrapped up on Devil's Bag. This is as good a 2-year-old as I've ever had."

Devil's Bag is a son of the 14-year-old stallion Halo, who stands at Windfields Farm near Chesapeake City on Maryland (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Maryland/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm)'s Eastern Shore. At the beginning of '83, Halo stood for a stud fee of $30,000, but having sired both Kentucky Derby (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Kentucky_Derby/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) winner Sunny's Halo and Devil's Bag, his fee is bound to skyrocket.

Devil's Bag made his first start on Aug. 20 at Saratoga (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Saratoga/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) and he went swoosh against eight opponents. Following the race, Stephens (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Woody_Stephens/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) was asked, "What was that thing that you just ran?" The trainer laughed. "That thing," he said, "is a runner. He is some kind of a freak. I loved this horse from the first time he set foot on a racetrack. This winter when I went to Florida (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Florida/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) I took Devil's Bag along with me. No, it's not normal to take a 2-year-old to Florida (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Florida/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) in the winter because there are no races for 2-year-olds at that time of the year. But this colt was not going to get out of my sight. And, wait and see, he'll get better."

And Devil's Bag did. He won his second start by 5 lengths before outclassing his field in the Cowdin. Granted, the Champagne will be his first major test, but few doubt that he will pass it. If one might wonder about Devil's Bag's ability, Stephens (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Woody_Stephens/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) sent his "second-string" 2-year-old, Swale, a son of Seattle (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Seattle/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) Slew, to Keeneland last Saturday, and he won the $171,625 Breeders' Futurity.

At present, nobody would dare put a dollar value on either Devil's Bag or Althea. Lukas and Stephens (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Woody_Stephens/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) are both masters when it comes to exciting the public about their horses. Should the 3-year-olds and older horses continue to be inconsistent, both trainers can be expected to campaign their 2-year-olds for Horse of the Year. Lukas blames himself for Althea's lone defeat, indicating that he had not trained the filly hard enough for her second start. Last week, Stephens (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Woody_Stephens/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) looked on as Devil's Bag worked five furlongs at Belmont Park (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/topic/article/Belmont_Park_Raceway/1900-01-01/2100-12-31/mdd/index.htm) in :58, doing it almost effortlessly. The two horses will probably make three more starts each before being turned out for the winter, and the writers and racing officials who vote for the Horse of the Year will be paying close attention.

Mike was a professional Thoroughbred jockey. He started his career in 1964. In the 25 years that he raced he rode 2313 Winners. He was loved and admired by everyone who knew him and many others who never met him. On October 13, 1988, it was in fifth race at Belmont. The mount he was racing broke its leg, Mike was thrown into the path of oncoming racers and was trampled and killed instantly. A fine life taken far too soon.
You did what you loved and was very good at it , but this tragedy took you from the family much too soon .

Birth: 1945Death: Oct. 13, 1988/icons2/trans.gif

That's a picture of Mike Luzzi. He WON the Mike Venezia award in 2001.

Whatever website you got that from (and the links you provide don't seem to work) has it wrong.
