Starting with Saturday's card, it appears that, to increase field size, $10,000 will be added on to each purse if more than 8 horses enter.

It worked first out: 118 entered for Saturday, an average of 10.7 a race.

That sounds like a much better angle than Arlington Park took.

Didn't Arlington announce they were decreasing purses for shorter fields?

I'm considered a NYRA cheerleader by some but I do believe you need to be fair about things. You need to weigh the fact that that is Wood day and also will have some of the first turf racing in NY this season. So not sure that this bonus had a whole lot to do with this at least for this Saturday. You see those numbers on a Wednesday card, then you might have something.

So is this purse bump going to continue past Wood day? If so, I think it's a great idea.

NYRA has done purse bumps for big race days for a couple of years. I think it's Wood/Belmont/Travers/JCGC day. Not sure about Cigar Mile day. Generally any race run that day is more competitive than the "standard" for that condition.

Sorry for thread drift but big reason for above is they race 4 nights a week not 5.

NYRA should do same imho
