A 10 race card and all are 5 furlongs ?? Whats up with that; the Canadian version of Calders ''Summit of Speed"

Did they build condos on the clubhouse turn over the winter ??

They start every season with 5 furlong races. I guess the theory is that the horses aren't ready for anything longer than that.

Woodbine always does that when they open in the spring. They are kinda like warm up races/workoouts, esp for the horses who go long.

PS-I'm gonna leave my typo of the word 'workouts' as is...makes it sound Canadian. :D

they do the same thing at finger lakes. i like the idea to get the meet going. my only wish is that woodbine would be real dirt instead of synthetic.

Woodbine is the only plastic track in North America that I like. For my style of handicapping, however, it is unplayable until May. With only comebackers and shippers, these first month races are a blur, at least for myself. After they have had a race or two, then things become more settled down, and then we have the long, long meet that goes until December.

They actually have a season in Canada.
Instead of wringing the lemons dry, they let them have a rest.

Looking at the Condition Book, the first route races is not scheduled until the ninth day of the meet (April 22nd). Any idea when the turf races begin? I am guessing some time in May?

Looks like the first one last year was May 15.

When you and I were just boys, they were 4.5 furlongs at Greenwood (previously known as Woodbine). David Clark on a Gord Huntley horse the first 2 or 3 weeks of the season was money from home (at 6/5 mind you). (Tom taught me that :) ).

I love 4.5 furlong races early in the year.

If so, have you discovered Los Alamitos yet? Could be just the place for keeping you up late at night. ;) Plenty of 4 1/2 TB races all year long. Of course, the max claiming price is $5000, most of these races are for $2000 and $2500 conditioned runners so slow and with so many ailments that they are unable to work between often widely spaced starts. Lots of fun to try and handicap, but only if you enjoy playing the lottery at the racetrack.:D

Not that Finger Lakes has a ton of routes, but they start with 4.5 furlong races each year. It's a good idea, like an actual racing season.
