He really went out on a limb didn't he? He picked all four #1 seeds to reach the Final Four.

I bet he wouldn't bet a horse higher than 3/5 !

It's not a dumb move. Odds are good that 3 of them will make it. The tournament has a rep for upsets, but for the most part they do not happen.

Al,

These are the composite stats from 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
2007 was a very chalky year.

Money line wagers:

12 vs. 5 - 8 wins - 8 losses = 50%
11 vs. 6 - 9 wins - 7 losses = 56%
10 vs. 7 - 9 wins - 7 losses = 56%

Those are where the so called upsets live because so often what you have is the 6th or 7th team from a big conference playing a winner of a small conference. Ones, twos and threes just don't lose much in the first week. Too many analysts overhype very low seeds in the first round. This year for me Belmont and Oakland are not to be touched.

When I fill out my bracket I do zero handicapping.
Just pick the higher seed to win EVERY game. You will do better than the majority of folks, and maybe win your local workplace or drinking place pool.

Try it.

Al, my point was that it looks like there is money to be made betting the 10, 11, and 12 seeds money line wagers only.

I'm betting the same amount on each of those games over the next 2 days.
A total of 12 games @ $10 per game = $120.

Clearly agree as that is where straight win upsets tend to happen

Who knew Obama was so conservative?

Where is the fun in picking chalk? Of course the favorite will win most of the time, but that is why they are higher seeds.

If you pick a lower seed to win and they do win....then you have bragging rights!

Anybody can go with the crowd. If the crowd is right, you are just one of the sheep. If you go out on a limb and are right...then that's awesome!

I would rather brag that I won the office pool and not that I had that 12 seed beating a 5 seed in round one, instead of the other way around. There's usually some prize for winning the pool; not for predicting an early upset.

True. We aren't playing for money though.

After the first 12 games, Obama's picks are 11-1, good enough to be in the top 1/10th of 1% in ESPN's contest. The only game he missed was the Louisville game (and didn't Pitino's boys suck?).

He's 14-2 after the first day, slipping to the top 3/10ths of 1% in ESPN's standings. Best I could come up with on my 10 brackets is 13-3 on a couple of them.

Quite a few brackets are at 16-0; believe there were nearly 6 million brackets submitted in their contest.

I'm pretty much shot already. Got my Richmond over Vandy but after that it all went down hill. Louisville loss was a killer, just a poor performance there. Mich St ended a very disappointing season just when it looked like they might be getting their act back together. Only 10-6. Worst start in some time.

Doesn't that concern anyone? It does me...clearly he's been paying attention to college hoops, studying the brackets, burning the midnight oil, consulting advisors and really doing his homework....but...

BASKETBALL WASN'T THE ASSIGNMENT !!!
America was

Whoa, I got in a funny at the expense of the Pres

He loves basketball. Everybody needs to have a little time away from the job, even the President. It's cool with me.

Speaking of Obama, what do he and midgets have in common ??

Pretty much everything is over their heads.

Sorry, heard it today and had to share.

Maybe if he had more time to handicap the bracket he'd have shown some balls. His puppetmaster told him "Hurry, if you don't make your picks NOW, you'll lose 8% of the games right off the bat".

as for the tourney, anyone else suprised how few people there are in the stands in some of these games? I haven't watched many of these games since 2000 or so, seems like there was more "madness" in the crowds in the past

Is it me or are the refs completely overlooking walking when a player makes initial contact with the ball ?? And is palming ever called ??

I watch both with failures to call violations with astonishment !!
