Not only does Saratoga mean great racing in a classic venue, but more importantly it means the annual PA Saratoga get together, which for me is always the best part of the meet.

I have reserved tables for us again this year. This year's dates will be Aug 13th through 21st. Because we didn't have too many people early in the week last year, I cut back to one table for 13th-15th. But don't let that stop you from coming that weekend if it is your only chance. Have the same number of tables 18th-21st as before and Ted Craven's group will be in again this year as well. Brilliant me forgot to coordinate with Ted this year, but we'll still likely be close enough together to mix as in past years. Friday the 19th seems to have become the night to go over to Saratoga harness as well, so come one come all and see what washed up rocker we'll see there this year.....

What's missing from the above is Wednesday the 17th. Unfortunately someone beat me to the punch and reserved the whole Festival Tent that day, but never fear. As a replacement, we have been offered 2 tables over at the Big Red Spring (drink it at your own risk...) for that day. I do know we are close to some SAMs over there, but I don't know about the power situation. I will scout it out when I get up there in July and post then along with my running commentary on the season up north.

So make your vacation plans now and get ready for another year of fun and good friends.

I'll be up Thursday the 18th through Saturday the 21st, flying home the 22nd.

Staying at the Island View w/ Joe Prunes and lady friend. Do not know at this point if cj and/or Justin are attending.

For those of you who don't know of the Island View motel, it is 30 minutes from Saratoga-easy drive and several nice restaurants on the way back after the races. The Waterhouse Bar and Grill is several hundred yards up the road from the island View and is a good relaxing spot to partake of a few chilled ones.

I plan to sleep under the tables overnight this year to save a few bucks. I'm sure that will impress Mrs JustRalph a great deal.

The Sartin gang has 3 tables on Friday and Saturday, and 2 on Sunday. Group Sales says we're all together. We'll have electrical stuff and hopefully a wifi hotspot. Happy to pool the tables - just need a few dollars per, to cover costs.

Can't wait!

Right now we are still covered in winter snow, but finally it is melting with a week of temp's in the 50's and a sunny St. Patrick's Day, life is great

My sprint 3G hotspot worked fine all around the track. There are wifi nets at the track and they work a little, until the gates open. Then they are dead

Think of it more as Saratoga is an island of coverage in a sea of nothing. We used to stay near Corinth. Late at night some messages would come through on the blackberry, but for the most part you couldn't get a signal until you were within about a mile or two of town. In town and at the race course there is no problem at all. Every year more towers get put up, so you never know if it will be better this year outside of town, but can't count on it.

If you (or anyone else) are going to be in the Saratoga area on Friday August 12th you may want to consider going to the Horse Racing Hall of Fame induction.

It’s held at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion which is about a couple of blocks from the track (and they are very short blocks). It’s free and you don’t need tickets, just walk up. I would get there early though if you want a seat as it can get pretty crowded and it’s first come first serve.

Thanks for the tip.

A trip to Saratoga demands a trip to the museum itself. It is a great place to buy a gift for your favorite horse racing person - which at my house, would be me!

Last time I was there with Beth I came away with a couple of must-haves, including a signed Barbaro picture. (No, not signed by the horse.) I later gave the picture to a valued friend as a birthday present. Hmm... might look for a replacement.

When attending the meet at Saratoga I always enjoy a long sit on a bench in front of the Racing Office, near the Jockey's Room entrance.

Lots of racing personalities, press people stopping in for credentials, and assorted hangers-on to watch.
Quite the mix fashions too.

Sometimes a nice conversation starts up with folks connected to the business.

Yep. Have had the occasion to bump into people in the business around that location.
I prefer not hang around there too long as it gets real busy with pedestrian traffic.

Hey Tom,

Isn't the photo from the year you guys spent the Spa week at Lake George ?

Dave Schwartz

Jim Parker and I will be there from 12th-23rd, staying at the Island View (Lake Luzerne) with the CJs and others.

From the 14th-23rd we have a 2-br with a bed for rent.

Those days are $132 per night (including the $10 increase for the 3rd person). If anyone wants to spend a whole week with us, we'll call it $45 per night or $315 for the week.

The daily rate to sublet that extra bed will be $12 higher = $57.

If you're going to stay with us on Friday, you need to stay Saturday as well.

Non-smokers and non-snorers only. We will have a rental car and can provide a ride to and from the track (assuming you are willing to travel when we do).

Email or call me if interested.

Regards,
Dave Schwartz

or the trip to the harness track.

From the moment he walked through the door, he was dripping class. His hair, his wife beater tshirt and his too short shorts.

. . . I can still see him; he's burned in my memory forever.

I should have written, "his hair, his wifebeater tshirt and . . . his nutters.

Don't you remember? Cjd, it was your own son that had the name for those shorts!

When he whispered it; I laughed 'til I had tears in my eyes. After that--useless--I couldn't keep a straight face the rest of the night.

I wonder if Al still has his photo in his phone?

PA had to take it down, here on the board.

Dave, your guy, he's just plain unfortunate. On the other hand, "Nutter" had style and a gold chain.

No thank you emanating from me.

I don't have it on my phone (I just checked) but think it may be on my laptop. Regardless it remains burned into my brain. And I still crack up every time I think of it too. The hair was just incredible. You could see through it on top, and I was a huge fan of the shirt with the sleeves ripped off and the threads still dangling. The nutters were not properly captured in the picture, but maybe that's a good thing.

Okay, I have to ask... "Nutters?"

Does that mean what it sounds like it means?

BTW, the DMR guy hangs in the hallway outside my office. One of the many treasures my bride found for me at a garage sale. I think she paid $0.50 (and worth every penny).

Those shorts guys wore in the 80's that went maybe to mid thigh.
Think basketball and tennis length...
