I am putting this in the H'capn section so all will see, even those not involved in the contest.

There are 50 teams comprised of 3 players each. Each week, the team makes $240 in wagers. There are 8 events which consist of 3- $2 WPS bets + 1- $2 - 3 horse exacta boxed wager. So, in effect each week = $30 x 8 races.

I went over the results for the past weeks to see how many teams had a positive ROI. The results are as follows:

Week 1 - 26-50
Week 2 - 10-50
Week 3 - 13-50
Week 4 - 14-50
Week 5 - 11-50
Week 6 - 13-50
Week 7 - 7-50
Week 8 - 8-50

I understand, that in reality, many (most) would not in a single race place 3 WPS wagers. Still, I think the results indicate what an incredibly difficult game this is to beat.

Our team matches its name, Swing for the Fences, and the decline in number of teams with a profitable ROI the past two weeks is directly related to the overwhelming number of heavy winning favorites during that span. Not a coincidence that we finished last in our division both weeks. It's hard to turn a profit when a string of favorites wins and exactas are $20 or less.

The past two weeks ???

Week 1 - 26-50 = 52%
Week 2 - 10-50 = 20%
Week 3 - 13-50 = 26%
Week 4 - 14-50 = 28%
Week 5 - 11-50 = 22%
Week 6 - 13-50 = 26%
Week 7 - 7-50 = 14%
Week 8 - 8-50 = 16%

There has been only one week with a + ROI.

It is a tough game. Contests are different. You are forced to play races you don't like, and even races that are terrible betting races. Throw in the WPS and 3 horse exact box for this one, both generally very bad betting practices, and these numbers don't surprise me a bit.

Don't forget having to place wagers without being able to take real-time odds/payouts or betting value into account.
