Average daily all-sources handle has skyrocketed 27.9 percent at Charles Town Races in West Virginia this year, according to figures provided by the track.

Through two months of racing and 36 full cards, average daily handle at Charles Town has been $1,112,986, up from $870,016 per card last year, according to the figures. The jump has come entirely from additional handle at out-of-state locations, with average export handle jumping 29.9 percent, from $822,476 per day last year to $1,068,583 this year. Ontrack handle has declined 6.6 percent from last year, from $47,539 per day to $44,403 per day.

humm... I don't know. But if I am looking to play a night time track during the week, more times than not it's going to be charles town. It's fairly predictable

The Sunday to Tuesday switch in MNR's absence was a sharp move IMO

My guess is TVG is showing Charlestown more than ever. They are even featuring them on Tuesday nights now.

Whatever the reason it's nice when a smaller track can improve handle. Now if they reduced takeout that would be a nice reward for their players.

January 2011.

Now that Mnr has resumed racing (on 03/01/11) it will be interesting to see how much handle increase stays with CT.

Players LOVE full fields. :)

I assume Mountaineer's winter vacation forced a lot of players to Charles Town. But one thing I've yet to see mentioned is the CT signal is in High Definition format. The presentation is probably the crispest among the prime-time racetracks going today.

And also the people running Charles Town are smart enough to provide Live Video and Replays (http://www.hollywoodcasinocharlestown.com/Racing/Racing%20Live%20Video) on their website as a matter of course.

Now why can't their brothers at Penn National do this?

You think HD helped handle?

Also, isn't this a yr-over-yr comparison? MNR was closed for the first two months of 2010, too, I believe.

Well it certainly makes an impression to the bettors staring at the wall
of monitors in a teletheatre. Imagine if they had someone like Maggie Wolfendale in the paddock giving out handicapping insights. ;)

The idea is that Charles Town racing has taken steps to present an improved
horse racing product. I'm not sure Hollywood Casino at Penn National is utilizing the same formula for success.
