Right now I commend Churchill with their Derby pool. They have promoted it and made it something fun. Technically it should be treated as a loss leader, because it markets your event for you.

Is this good enough? I think in ten years, this wager will be much different than today, and I think it will help racing because big events drive casual fans, and giving casual fans more ways and better ways to participate and share their experiences, is what we're after.

There are a few problems with the Future Pool. All horses are not represented, the odds lack a true real time feel, and you cannot change your bets after they are made. This is something that the "World Sports Exchange" tackled as far back as 1997, and it changed the market forever.

What can a "Derby Exchange" for betting do? Quite a bit.

First, it can allow you to trade your position. If you have an eye for horses, or pedigree, and you find a nice horse off of a bad line, the sky is the limit. Let's look at the Grand National at Betfair for an example:

this is the first year in the last 5 that interest has been high on horses. the fairgrounds, gulfstream and tampa meets are all fabulous this year. i have no idea why, but people are playing those venues and showing up to the track. each of those places have full stalls. this is coming off the back of poor keeneland and saratoga meets. i am thinking that because of the winter meets the others will do well also.

The Kentucky Derby Futures wagering does not excite me.
It never really has. Not with Vegas offering better odds on all the individual horses.

With modern technology the Derby Futures should have by now,
expanded from win wagering to exacta futures wagering
with real time odds available to the public on a online grid.
Or simply by punching in the names (#) of the two horses.

As it stands Churchill Downs is merely content to take their share of the cut
from three individual pools without much forward thinking.

Futhermore, why is there a need to cut off wagering on a Sunday,
the middle day of a three day weekend? Inexplicably this seems to be
happening almost every year?

Ladies and gentlemen running this wager, please I implore you...
think http://i56.tinypic.com/314qv52.gif just a little bit.

Technically everything that has to do with horse racing these days is a loss leader. Racinos are a prime example of this. They run races so they can have their slots, which is where they make their money. Anybody whose main product is someone else's loss leader should get real comfortable. But I digress.....
