Oaklawn is just getting killed right now. we are going to get about 6-8 inches tomorrow. you can forget racing on thursday or Friday. Best hope is saturday, it is supposed to be pretty cool, low 50's by saturday. But It's not looking good right now.

Oaklawn really needs to consider moving dates back a few weeks.

I concur. But the weekend weather looks much better.

Tomorrow: Periods of snow. Cold. High 28F.
Winds NE at 10 to 20 mph. Snow accumulating 5 to 8 inches.

Tomorrow night: Scattered snow flurries and snow showers before midnight.
Becoming partly cloudy later. Cold. Low 13F. Winds N at 5 to 10 mph. C
hance of snow 50%.

Thursday: Mix of sun and clouds.
Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the upper teens.

Friday: Mainly sunny. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the mid 20s.

Saturday: Sunny. Highs in the low 50s and lows in the mid 30s.

Doesn't Turfway get a lot of snow too or is this on another scale?

Turfway is not a "destination" like Oaklawn, not the "event" that Oaklawn has become over the years. Like comparing winter racing at Big "A" to Saratoga. Apples to cumquats.

I'm not comparing statuses, just wondering why one can handle lots of snow and the other can't. Maybe it's different snow?

Oaklawn is in a national park.

I'm guessing that Turfway, like AQU Inner has some sore of composition that makes it functioanl in cold, snowy conditions. Running at OP right now is kind of like trying to race at Saratoga this weekend.

Turfway is a lot like Denny's - no one goes there, they end up there.

I think I remember something about Oaklawn being in a National Park they were not allowed to use certain chemicals on the track to deal with it freezing.

This is what happens when you choose to start your meet too early...SNOW!!! Didn't the OP meet used to start in Feb?
Why the move to Jan? Dilutes the FG product a bit.

They started the mid January start back in the 70's. Oaklawn mgmt. has always allowed the Horsemen the final voice in whether to race or not. they aren't going to force racing and have a conflict with horsemen. If Oaklawn cancels, you can be sure the horsemen have made the decision and the track supports it. Also, management has always taken in consideration the safety of the fans in traveling to Oaklawn.

This is the way it's been since I was a teenager going to Oaklawn in the 60's.

No, just noting that both are open during some pretty bad weather and manage to run. I do prefer dirt, but I also think that OP should re-consider a mid-January opening if they keep getting pummelled with 6-8 inches of global warming every January.

It's right in the middle of Hot Springs. I don't know if that's a national park, with a casino attached.

It isn't like this is a normal winter.

I would imagine it isn't the track so much as the roads and travel in the area. It has to be a tough commute with that location.

Yes. Lots of winding road to deal with.

The storm that is heading there dumped 17 inches of snow on us yesterday.

Sorry Oaklawn is getting pounded by the weather this year. Just ship down to Delta Downs so we can proclaim ourselves the "Oaklawn of the Deep South". :)

Same here in OKC...gm10 had to continue his streak of never being about anything. I have no idea how anyone could jump to blaming the surface for a blizzard.

Yes, cause we all know the weather is so predictable. People really need to relax over missing a few days of racing. It hardly ever snows in Hot Springs in February. Do people realize they average 3 inches of snow PER YEAR!?

This seems to just be a exceptional winter, weather wise...nothing about it is 'normal'. Where I live, this particular part of Wyoming, the Big Horn Basin, doesn't get much snow on the 'flat' every year (it all dumps on the surrounding mountains), but we've had snow on the ground for several weeks, we had a whiteout blizzard the other day, we have deep drifts all over the place...and last night it was 25 below zero....makes it real fun:rolleyes: being outside at 3am getting a new born calf away from mama and into the warming box:D

Not really, only a 22 mile stretch from when you leave the Interstate to Hot Springs. Wide 2 lane road with passing lanes and wide paved shoulders.

Looks just like the winter track in South Ozone Park.

I too, wonder what Dr. Terry's prognosis http://i53.tinypic.com/f1a1pt.gif will be for today.

The 1st race is not until 1:30 PM, any remnants will be gone by then. By the 5th race, look for the track to quicken. They will turn the track surface after every race, to make it dry quicker. By saturday's card things will be normal and the track will be extremely fast next week. If weather forecasts are accurate.

It figures I'd dedicate my entire winter betting to Oaklawn for the first time this yr. 8 cancellations so far, the racing Goddess is really blessing me. I should have studied geography and weather patterns in school. My Gr.Father was from Little Rock and never mentioned they had this kind of weather. I guess never being from the south I'll just claim ignorance. I thought last yr. was the abberation, I'm thinking it's the norm now.

The positive side of your predicament is, you haven't lost any (more) money and they still have 36 days remaining in the meet. I see all pluses. ;)

Money isn't much of a problem, and I actually had a decent start to the meet. The month and a half of research before the meet started and the handicapping of todays card and a couple other cancelled cards is a major irritant.

I certainly understand the frustration. I play Oaklawn and the Triple Crown series only. I use to play everyday, but learned you can't be a winner in the long run. The older I got, the less time I wanted to put into it. It became a Hobby I wanted to enjoy, instead of an all consuming addiction.

When I started treating it that way, it became fun and profitable. I look forward to the balance of the meet and certainly hope it goes well. Hope you can find the winning groove again. Best wishes

No, but they have added a 10th race. They might do that (add wed) starting in March. Horses will be in better condition and all the bad weather (snow & ice) will definitely be a non factor. I believe it to be a non factor now but, this year has been the exception Nationwide.

I live in the Southern third of Ms. and we have had the same type of weather. Our last snow and ice was (4 inches thurs & 15 degrees) and now we have a high of 65 today. According to weather channel, the Jet Stream had come about 3-4 hundred miles further South than normal this winter. Not only came further south but stayed longer. We are about 300 miles South and East of Hot Springs.

According to our local paper. This weather cycle has repeated itself here every 10-15 years. Just seems to be a normal chain of events.

You know what I always end up getting when I go to Denny's? I get the dinner sampler, and I sub the onion rings for fries. I like their chicken strips, and it comes with cheese sticks too. that with the strawberry lemonade they have..umm umm.
