Tioga to keep lower takeouts for 2011 (http://www.harnessracing.com/news/tiogatokeeplowertakeoutsfor2011.html)

Last year Tioga Downs, in conjunction with its horsemen’s group, the Southern Tier Harness Horsemen's Association (STHHA), experimented with a pilot program to lower its takeout rates across the board to New York state minimums. The track will continue with the program in 2011.

The original Tioga Downs’ takeout rates were 18 percent for WPS, 20 percent for exactas/doubles, and 25 percent for all other exotics. For the 2011 race season the price of those wagers will be reduced as they were in 2010 to: 15 percent WPS, 17 percent exacta/double and 21 percent for all other exotics.

“We are happy that the program was a success last year :) and we will continue to support the racetracks lower rates this year. The STHHA understands that management is focusing on our bettors concerns and we support that 100 percent,” said Guy Howard, president of the STHHA.

Good for Jeff Gural's Tioga.

Would have liked to see something progressive like a 15% exacta rate.
That move would be a cinch to get more vertical (spot) players interested.

TKS:

Thanks for the update! Also, thanks to the management and horsemen at TIOGA DOWNS, for their progressive thinking of the bettors' wants for lower takeout rates.

Kudos to Tioga Downs. A definate step in keeping in the right direction. Even a marathon begins with a single step, if more tracks follow the lead maybe this game can survive for many more years.

Although I do agree that wagering WPS is a mainly a thing of the past, it is a step in a positive direction which could lead to reducing take in other areas such as exacta and triples. We shall see.

Smart move by Gural & Co. With so many harness tracks running at that time of year, Tioga has done something to make itself stand out from the crowd.

You also have to figure that Tioga will be a beneficiary if the Meadowlands shuts down. Lots of horseman will be looking for a place to set up shop.

Could this be why Mr. Gural got involved with M1 at this time? To build relationships?

Reducing take and breakage in the win-place-show pools has been long overdue. It's the first step in what I hope will expand to other single race pools, such as the exacta which is my favorite pool.

They have to give it time though.
Most racetracks that experiment do not publicize it well enough
or long enough to gain the confidence of the wagering public to keep the pools growing.

Long term commitments is where it's at.
