If someone was a total newbie to the sport and they wanted to formulate an entire handicapping process from 2-3 books out today, which would be the ones to suggest?

I was thinking to myself what 2-3 books a newbie could read, take notes from and utilize to come prepared to the track from day 1..

Picking Winners (Beyer) and Winning at the Races (Quirin) for sure,
and tied for third the Daviowitz book, The Handicappers Condition Book or maybe one of the early Tom Ainslie books.

For a newbee I would say, Recreational Handicapping, Quinn, The Handicappers Condition Book, Quinn, and Winners File, by Henry Kuck. JimL

Common Sense Handicapping by Mitchell, Pace Makes The Race by Schmidt and Hambelton, or even Handicapping Magic by Pizzolla.

In my opinion, the following are must-reads for any horse player:

Quirin's Winning at the Races
Brohamer's Modern Pace Handicapping
Fierro's Four Quarters of Horse Racing

with honorable mention to:

Schmidt/Hambleton's Pace Makes the Race
Mitchell's Commonsense Betting

and for fun:

Beyer's $50,000 Year at the Races

and a life changer:

Anthony Robbin's Awaken the Giant Within

Learn to read the Form.Amazes me how many guys playing do not know how to read past performances. Then read Pace makes the race. Then Beyer on speed and betting Thoroughbreds by davadowitz. You should learn something (mostly what not to do)by most of the books out there. Then be prepared to undertake a long time learning what works for you,may take some time, trial and error, but you got to learn before you earn.

"How will your horse run today " by William Scott
Then
The Psychology of Winning...
An Introduction to WIN THERAPY by Howard G. Sartin Ph.D.

You mean you've never read "Handicapping for Liberals"?. I hear their method produces a higher R.O.I. than "The Conservative Crapper".OOPS,I meant Capper..

great title! OK, I'm halfway there.

;)

Any book I write (LOL!) would be the contrarian handicapping text of all time. If there's anything that gets my goat on this board is when people say, "The way to win is x..." or "you can't win without doing Y....(pace figures, trainer intent, track models, etc.)"
Or my favorite
"Beyer figures are worthless."

I often use Beyers (or Cramers, they're about the same quality) to get my 4-5 contenders in 2 minutes a race and it works great, even gives me longshots. I had a $22 horse at Belmont in June that had the highest fig (same distance/surface) in the last 3 months. There was another in April at AQU that I missed with a very competitive Beyer fig recently that paid $60. Not that I usually bet those, but I'm just saying they do come in.

The top 3 for me would be
1) Betting Thoroughbreds (Davidowitz)
2) Modern Pace Handicapping (Brohamer)
3)The Best Of Thouroughbred Handicapping (quinn+)
Before you all jump over me on #3..Remember its for a beginner and this book does touch on alot of different topics
