LARGE EARLY WAGERS

I Want to track,mostly for fun the hit rate of these seemingly outlandish wagers when the poolsopen. To quailify the horse must be bet hard early... examples are harness wagers with 1k open up or Tampa 5k open up or Santa Anita 30k open up. The horse must still go off under even money. Often the horse will be obvious and often he will just look competitive. I will tally daily the ones I see and if you post ones I dont see then I will tally those too.

Yesterday I saw 3 do this and all 3 won.

calabreese is the owner and the trainer I believe he uses the most now is Nick Canani who has won 88 of his last 232 races, an almost unbelievable 38% wins

I know a lawyer that lost 200k in a similar manner... he got out of the investing in horsefless business. Well he won like he was worth the 60k. Post a vid of that race.. probably one of the most lopsided I can remember.

This happened last night at Delta in a later race. Some horse was 1-9 all the way thru the betting, even as last as like 1 MTP. Everyone else was 10-1 or higher. The horse won by a city block for those keeping score. I'm not sure what the final price ended up being, maybe 1-5?

Honestly here - As someone that has read the rules of the state a trillion times and has worked in capacities where I should know for sure, I still doubted myself and checked the rules.

I've heard limp threats to "refuse his entry" enough times and alternately been miffed at what is given a pass that it makes you stop knowing what to think.

Among the duties and powers of the Racing Secretary, there is nothing authorizing him/her to deny an entry (that is in accordance with all rules).

Among the specifically mentioned duties/powers of the stewards, they may refuse entries for violations of state rules and statutes, whereas the racing secretary is charged as his first duty with reporting any violations of rules to the stewards.

So aside from being rather loosey goosey in general, I guess you have to follow the hidden flow chart to draw the conclusion that the secretary can't deny an entry, but he should go tell the Stews of any illegalities in case the may decide to act to deny.

Now, the owner of the track might think differently and that his rules supercede the state's or that his interpration of an event trumps the opinion of the stewards.

This generally turns into a giant pissing match, but it also tends to lead to the uncovering of the greatest rule in horse racing - and it also is the rule that renders just about everything else totally irrelevant up and until the appellate court intervenes -

E,3. - The stewards shall have the power to interpret the rules and to decide all questions not specifically covered by the rules. In all interpretations and decisions, the orders of the stewards supersede the orders of the permittee (track).

So, yeah, the stewards can absolutely refuse an entry for whatever they want. The rules state that they can deny an entry that is in violation of the rules, but it never specifically limits their power to deny either - if that is how the stewards "interpret" the way the rule reads. You'd be amazed at how glaringly unspecific the rules can be at times and yet at others, you risk death for questioning something that is clearly in the rules.

My opinion - short of a Mike Gill/Shuman type dust-up, you'll be hard pressed to see almost any horse EVER denied an entry at this point in racing's sordid break with reality... no matter how obscene its presence.

E.g., "horses that have not run for a purse greater than $X since mm/dd/yy" or, perhaps, "who have not finished ITM in a race having a purse greater than etc."

In a race in which I have no selection and had intended to pass, love early money on a horse, and will often pick up an extra play on these types. However, do have some qualifiers. Small tracks that may only have a thousand dollars or so in the win pool after the first flash not so good, prefer the major and mid sized tracks. Do not care for the extreme huge early bets on very short priced standout favorites, zero value, the less extreme more subtle type of early action better. The morning line maker can be way off, a runner that seems to be getting bet may actually just be the public betting it like it should, so a good adjusted ML is needed. The pool ratios on the early wager must be out of line, ie, mostly all on the front end, very little to place and show. The odds must gradually drift upward, should be double or more at some point during the cycle. Often these types get hammered again very late, no problem, but better still price wise if they continue to drift upward.

This kind of thing has been happening a lot more often in NY since NYCOTB closed and the pools are smaller.

I think the decline of NYCOTB made the game more difficult to beat. Anyone that was even semi serious about the game is still playing by either phone or computer, but at least a couple hundred million dollars of unsophisticated money that made it's way around the country annually is probably not getting bet anymore.

(Note: I haven't seen all the handle data around the country and I'm not sure you could trace everything anyway, but based on the evidence I have seen a TON of money is not being bet any more nationally)

Interesting observation that poses a question for me.....if this is "smart money" that goes in early, how smart is it to drive the odds down so quickly as to allow such observations? When/where does the real "smart money get wagered? Bookies........

THE answer is obvious...the public believes they are underlays and wont risk against them... and bet the others.... were only about 15 plays in so too early to really know if they hold up.. but so many are 2-5 or lower.. its hard to say..

i know the guy that is betting these horses. he makes his own numbers and is pretty good at what he does. he told me he expects to make 1 1/2% after rebate. its a stone cold loser without top rebate he tells me.
