Seriously, if I had to come up with a short list of states that should be revoked from even considering building race courses, ohio would be at the top of the list. They run for less than 5k purse money quite often per race, and now you want to build another race track, that is going to be dependant on slots right off the bat. This makes me sick.

There is too much racing as it is.

This is the first time I've heard this story. Not even a rumor in our area about it. I like the plan tho. Thistledown in Cleveland and Mountaineer in West Virginia would be finished and this is a perfect central location for owners to run their cheap claimers. Those two tracks have been in a death spiral for years. The slots added on a few years at Mountaineer, but the writing is on the wall down there...management really despises horsemen and horseplayers. The owners of this new track should contact the Mountainman. He could make the place into an Oaklawn/Saratoga type meet.

This would be awesome. I've always thought about keeping horses on my property in Ohio -- which is not far from Youngstown.

I have never liked the idea of shipping to Mountaineer or Thistledown -- about 45-60 minutes. Youngstown and Lordstown are only about 20 minutes. That's a piece of cake.

Serious question. Why is there no racing in the deep south? Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, hell that's a circuit let alone a track.

I believe Pari-mutuel wagering is still illegal in Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont and the District of Columbia.

There is at least one dog track in Alabama.

Alabama had it and failed.

Vermont had racing for years.

I would be very surprised if they would be granted a license. It would be more probable that one of the current operators would sell them their license. I would imagine that Penn National with tracks near cities where they have a casino would throw open the welcome mat.

Not sure how they figure they can make money on such a venture. Ohio needs less racing not more.

That's easy....BTW in live in NC..
"yer in the buckle of the Bible Belt, here son"..
As they say down here in the Sunny South, "they ain't no gamblin allowed here"...
Alabama actually had a throughbred track in Birmingham...It was the Birmingham Turf Club....I went there when it was about a year old..
Now they have dog racing there.
Tennessee actually passed a pari-mutuel racing bill which was signed into law. To date, no one has attempted to build a track there.
Most likely the best places for tracks to be built in the south would be in or near Atlanta(largest population center in the south, except Florida's).
Or near Charlotte. Aiken is SC's horse country. A track there would have to be perhaps two short boutique meets. On in spring, one in fall.
NC .SC and GA to my knowledge have anti gambling statutes that go way back to the days where it was state law that in order to hold public office one HAD to be a Christian and attend church regularly.
Even with the huge influx of people from the Northeast and Midwest, there is still much control exerted by the church in the south.
Based on that fact I see no one taking down the "NO Gamblin' " signs down any time soon....

At this point, I question the wisdom of anyone wanting to waste real estate
on building an oval and a grandstand.

If you're in it to get a slots license.
Apply for a casino, dammit !

Home of the Seven and Seven and Seven !!!
Man, now I'm ticked. :faint:

Birmingham Turf Club was apparently a really nice track by all accounts, but only lasted a handful of years.
The Carolinas, Tennessee and Georgia all have racing, just no parimutuel wagering.

Is it going to be thoroughbreds, harness or dogs?

I love the idea. Build it and they will come. Racing could use a new thoroughbred track centrally located between Cleveland, Akron/Canton, Youngstown and Pittsburgh. I think it's a great location.

Columbus Dispatch is reporting Beulah Park is moving there.

Other places saying that Raceway park in Toledo is moving there.

Who knows......?

For slots perhaps.
There is no national clamor for more Ohio-brand horse racing, good location or not.

I still see no reason in this era why racetracks have to clear out
the grandstands with poor customer service and in-home wagering,
high takeout rates and go into the slots business.

If states want slots revenue, amend their laws and allow for
stand-alone casinos and leave horse racing out of it.

The new track would be located about 30 miles from Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort in West Virginia, and just across the Pennsylvania border from the planned Valley View Downs harness track, which also would have full-scale casino gambling.

It would be in the same market as the off-track betting parlor in New Castle, Pa., operated by The Meadows Casino & Racetrack, and roughly an hour from Presque Isle Downs & Casino near Erie, Pa.

_______________

Good job by Mr. LaMarra for checking the Triptik.
There is way too much gambling in that neck of woods and too little tourism.

Looks like all the racetracks in the area are going to be hit hard
once Valley View Downs cuts the ribbon.
