Indiana may get their slots subsidies reduced by 23%

How long before the state realizes that they can lower this payment even more.....or even worse....cut off the Indiana tracks from all of their welfare payments.

Maybe it's time to try to attract new customers to the track!!! Promote Horse Racing....have a business model that can support itself....What a concept.

Does this surprise anyone? When you keep putting your hand out...eventually it will get slapped away.

It is just one of first of many such moves that we will see across the country. If you depend on casino money to keep your race track open, you should be hard at work on plan B.

I have no problem with slot subsidies for horsemen, but when and where that happens takeout should be reduced.

I wonder how all this will shake out with Ohio planning on casinos at racetracks?I called River Downs to ask if I could interview the new owner but the deal isn't done yet.If purses go up in Ohio it will hurt Indiana.

Since takeout is never reduced I'll continue to have a problem with them.

And rightly so. I ran my horses at Mountaineer and it was good to have the large purses. When I buy more I will run them there again.

Well, you might want to look again. Have you seen the purses lately?

Haven't looked at them in a long time. I'll have a look. Are they down significantly?

Yes, they are.

Yes, they are.

I don't know, cj. They don't look that different to me from when we had horses running there. I seem to recall trying to run at the 6500 level for around $10,000.

Here is a sample I found from the December condition book:

7500 open claiming races for a 13,000 purse.
10K open claiming for 15K
5K open claiming for 11.9K

and a bunch of 5K claiming races for 8.9K

Maybe they will be dropping when racing resumes?

In 2007, an open 5k claimer was going for 15.7k. A 10k claimer for 20.7k. I'm not going to keep looking for a 7.5k claimer, I've already wasted 3 minutes. That is quite a drop.

i was wondering if NYRA still has a guaranteed pick 6 payout for when they don't have carryover's. when they first started there it was $50,000. now i see the pick 6 pools are smaller than what they used to be because of the small rebates that you can get with NYRA. as far as i know NYRA does not sell its signal offshore to places like RGS and ELITE. california still does and the rebates are still very high there for pick6 players.

Just curious. If you are going to race low level claimers, what is so attractive about the purses at Mountaineer?

In NJ and Pa. we run $5k -$7.5k claimers for probably 2 or 3 times what they race for at Mnr.

IMO, the only time that makes sense is if you buy a horse for a grand or two - meaning he really isn't a $5k claimer at all - and he needs softer competition for a chance to make money...

up until 2 years ago, mountaineer had great $5k open claimers. it was as good as sulfolk was years ago. with the lowering of the purses, the horses at the mountain are not the same as the ones that are running for the bigger purses. the mountain did put on a great show, i have no idea why they got away from that.

You're right. That is a big drop.

Now that you mention it, I do remember you could run for 3 times the claiming price. Plus, they paid all the way to like 9th place. I just looked at the date of the winner's photo on my wall from Mountaineer -- it was from April 2001 -- almost 10 years ago. No wonder I can't remember all the details!

Thanks for the info. We'll probably race them in NJ or PA! Plus, it's closer to home for me. Maybe I'll actually get to be at the track to see my horses run!
