Won the sham pretty easy after setting pretty quick fractions. He looked pretty good

Lone speed and appeared to be for real.

horse wants absolutely no part of 9F in a real race. uncle sam was vastly overrated and clubhouse ride is just not good.

he will be the cheap closing speed in the derby

Totally diagree. He was very headstrong today. I'm not sure why and I won't make any guesses. he'll need to get back to rating like he did the last two times. but I think he's very good and he's making the kind of progression I like to see at this time of the year.

I think Baffert will re group with Uncle Sam...keep him going short maybe...can't put too much stock in Tapizar just yet...
fact is, until a lot of the better ones leave SA and run on other dirt tracks, it's hard to figure out who is gonna do what...the SA dirt is scary...too fast, IMO.

Uncle Sam won his only start before today going two turns in an off the turfer. His siblings have all been routers. I'm going to guess they might try turf, considering Baffert had him entered on turf first out.

For what it's worth, Tapizar broke his maiden at Churchill last time by 10 1/2 lengths. So at least you know he can handle the surface.

Looks like Tapizar ran faster than the older horses in race 8- some of which have placed in Graded Stakes before. He also cranked out three sub 24 splits in this race - again, better than the older horses could do.

So, I'd say he looks pretty good so far. I don't think I've seen enough of his races to determine how well he can rate his speed.

I knew Uncle Sam won at a mile...not sure he can go longer, so I'd think keeping him at that or under is the way to go...maybe he would be better on turf, since that's where Baffert wanted him in the first place.

I forgot that Tapizar won at Churchill...stll will need to see more of him before I get excited...but certainly one to watch.

I never was all that impressed with uncle sam's firs trace. I am always extremely "meh" when I see 3YO's win in off the turf races. i.e d'meyer. That was a weak race and someone had to win it, and whoever won it was going to be hyped up imho.

I think tapizar has some talent, i just don't think he has any chance in Hyades to get 10F

Go and take a look at his Churchill win on tape, it was really good.

I don't know how good the field was but I'm pretty sure it was better than the San Fernando's 4yos.

what a bunch of great pictures of santa anita. i was fortunate to have visited that track about 3 times in my life when the superbowl's were in pasadena. i listened to andy yesterday on his interview with roger stein and i certainly can understand his passion for that place. i really hope that someone can figure out how to deal with everything out there now and keep california racing alive.
