Incredibly fast.

We're talking sub :44 1/2m and sub 1:09 times going 6f on a regular basis. The run ups are big:

6f- approx 78ft
6.5f- approx 85ft
1m- approx 128ft

Oddly, the 7f run up is small (about 25ft or so) so the times seem way slower compared to 6f and 6.5f. Don't recall the 1m16 run up but it is small compared to 1m.

My question here is, are these times faster than before the switch to poly? I never followed Cali before but am trying to get a set of SA pars to gauge their Derby crop. I know real dirt in Cali has always been fast, but this is ridiculousy quick.

I haven't been following it daily, but opening day was faster than you are likely to ever see at any track.

Did they break Spectacular Bid's 7F record that day or run 6F in 106 and change?

Seriously, I don't recall anything like opening day at SA but I'm sure I missed some fast ones.

They had a 106 race, Bob Black Jack I believe, and it wasn't 106.99 or anything. I'm almost certain Indian Blessing did run faster than Spectacular Bid at 7f also.

I don't think the latter point is correct but I could be wrong. Plus I think this was maiden that ran 106 and change. No matter how you slice it, that's sick.

It is correct. Rather than taking the time to type that, you could have Googled it like I did after I posted. :)

1m- approx 128ft

Last time I watched a one mile race at SA, the run up was about 70-80 yards or about 210 feet.

Equibase has listed every race at one mile on the new dirt track as having a run up of 172 ft, or about 57 yards.

What was the speed figure compared to Twirling Candy?

I was way off. It's been 172ft for this meet but only about 60-70ft for 8.5f and 9f races.

I don't remember the Beyer. I looked in my BC Archives to find my figure, it was 93...big pace number though. I had the track as 51 points fast. This year's opening day at SA was 49 at 6f, 42 for 7f.

Emerald Downs is often faster than this...crazy, eh?
