I hope I don't cause any waves here..(damn Canadian ;) ), but I am just curious.
So, I am watching the end of the Seattle/NO game and the commentators keep saying that the Seahawks beat the World Champions. The NBA champions are often called the NBA World Champions (OK, there are the Raptors;) ). What is the need for the word world in these?
I just remember John Cleese's statement about the differences between Americans and Brits. One was:
"In England, when we hold a World Championship for a particular sport, we invite teams from other countries to play, as well"
(But my favourite one was - he said this during Clinton's presidency - "When you meet the head of state in Great Britain, you only have to go down on one knee.":lol: )

I have no idea why we do it, Banacek. Maybe it's just all about the hype.

Let's simplify here Banacek !!
There are 3 sports which no other nation in the world plays as well as Americans; these would be Football, Baseball and Basketball. You want Ice hockey, Curling, Cross -country skiing, the Biathalon, etc.... they are all yours. The Koreans and Chinese want ping pong ? so be it. TRY NOT TO GET YOUR SHORTS IN A BUNCH OVER THIS TRIVIAL MATTER. We are the best in these 3 sports. The rest, the world can have - we do not care !!

As a fellow Canadian who has followed the NFL since the early 1960s, the answer to your question is likely found in this Wiki response:
"The Super Bowl is the championship game (/wiki/Championship_game) of the National Football League (/wiki/National_Football_League) (NFL), the highest level of professional American football (/wiki/American_football) in the United States (/wiki/United_States)...
The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (/wiki/American_Football_League) (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues' champion teams would play in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in 1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a "conference (/wiki/Conference_(sports))", and the game was then played between the conference champions."
So, that's how it came into being- a so called World Championship Game... like the World Series.
Now to go on to D's red, white and blue tub thumping:
1) The vast majority of Americans and Canadians(for that matter) believe that the NFL (and its MOSTLY American ) players play football the best in the world;
2) As you've mentioned, the vast majority of the REST of the world believes that THEY play football the best- especially, the Brazilians, the Italians, the Germans, the French, etc. ;) ;
3) Americans play their own game (baseball) the best in the world, but like some Canadian escapades in Hockey (our game), they don't win them all in world championships and many other countries are closing in;
4) Americans play round ball (invented by a Canadian, of course) the best in the world, but again, they certainly don't win all the time, e.g. at the Olympics, World Championships, etc.
5) Is a single team BETTER than a national side, regardless of country ? Probably, but that is a completely separate thread.

Did you know that Mr. Naismith is the only Kansas coach with a losing record?

I was very surprised to hear that. Not so much that he had a losing record but that he is the only coach with a losing record.
PS - Our son is currently at KU:) Not playing basketball:(

The NFL is the best league in the world by far, which means the team who wins the SB is the world champion.
