View Full Version : Breeders Cup 'Capping Contest, anyone?

If you've checked the BC forums, you know everything I'm going to say. I just figured I'd post it not only on the BC forums, but here also, where more people might see it. Want this to be huge.

As if you couldn't tell by the title, I'm holding a handicapping contest on the richest racing day in North America. So far, I have three people lined up (Myself, good ol' Suff (for the mere price of grovelling for forgiveness after the BoSox rallied to tie the series ) , and SilverSow (my stubborn old man, doesn't post often, but he has already guaranteed victory)) for it, and I'm desperately looking for as many as I can.

If you want specifics, check my many posts on the BC forums. Thanks for the time.

Sweet, Suff. For this, I hope your beloved Red Sox have your luck and end up wiping out the Yanks (someone should).

Questions, questions... I have many questions...

What's the prize? I saw a post about engraving a trophy - how does one engrave plastic, pray tell???

Yes, I'm in... and in the immortal words of Wayne R. Coe, a bit character in a WKRP in Cincinnati episode:

"You people are in big trouble now..." :)

This is good, this is real good. We've got two arrogant guys (SilverSow and CJ;) ), a Red Sox fanatic (Suff), a monkey (Tom), and a kid by all their standards (myself). Put us together, and you've got your basic prime-time hit. :D ;) :)

What a great show that was! My favorite quote from that show:

1) If you want to register for the contest, please do so by Sunday, October 19th.

2) With a little luck, PP's come out the Wednesday or Thursday before race day. *PLEASE* have your picks in by 10:00 (Eastern time) Saturday morning. Gives me some time to get ready.

Thanks for the time, and GO BOSOX!!!!!:D

This is great. Fourteen of PA's finest in a contest centering around one of horse racing's richest days.

Just so you know, I'm not going to make this WAY out of control. I'm going to cut off the entries either on October 19th or when we get to 35 people, whichever comes first. 35 is a fair number for a contest like this, so get your entries in fast.

Dave Schwartz:

Absolutely... WKRP is a classic... that's a great line... my favorite is this one, from Herb Tarlek right after making a sale:

"If you need anything... ANYTHING AT ALL... I'll be in my car somewhere..."

LOL... and to keep this racing-oriented... remember the episode where the terrorists bombed the transmitter? Fever destroys the phone when he tries to get a hunch bet in to his Chinese bookie (the guy's name is Wing - geez, I need a life) and the bookie puts him on hold? The longshot wins & Fever destroys the phone... then when the transmitter blows up, he thinks the "phone cops" are after him... LMAO...

By the way... WKRP is where my online monicker comes from... the Silver Sow award... the pig on Nessman's desk... LOL

And for all... I'm working on Bubbles to come up with an appropriate momento to commemorate this handicapping event, maybe something that can get passed on each year... something appropriately demonstrative of the achievement involved... and yet also... well, cheap... :D

As Suff said, winner gets a free weekend at Toga 2004. Picks are due to me by 10:00 A.M. Eastern on Saturday, October 25th. You can either post them on the BC forums or you can PM them to me. Here are the rules, once again...

-Every PAer gets $1,000 to use any way they wish on Cup day.

-There will be a $100 bonus in order if you hit a cold triple or super, hit on two 25-1 shots, or you have the biggest hit of the day.

-In the event of a tie, the percentage of bets hit will be used to break it.

Thanks a lot for the interest, and I'm sure that this'll be one heckuva contest. Good luck to everyone!

Just wanted to make sure I understood the rules. As I understand them there is $1000 to bet for the entire day. It can bespread over all races or bet in 1 race. The winner is the person with the highest bankroll.

Please let me know if i'm correct.

I can't imagine why you would have a cut-off - there can't be hundreds of people trying to get in to make scoring that difficult.

I would never turn down the chance to compete against a good horse player - never.

I suggest you re-consider.

First off, Tony, you're correct. There are also bonuses for certain feats/accomplishments, which are addressed in my posts on the BC boards.

FRH, I see your point. However, the cut-off was 35. I am proposing a compromise. Why don't the other contestents decide? Ya know, an impromtu, unbiased poll?

Suff

Mainly because we did'nt want a "run" on the contest just because we Added a Prize.

I've seen you compete in just about anything and everything we've had here...and at DRF. I know your a Competitor.

Seeing as you are the AAC champ... and your track Record... I would'nt be too upset at all if BUB's gave you a Exemption. You can even have the weekend if you win it...

But what do we tell Jimg? The 36th entrant? Your actually the 2nd guy that Missed,,,

Also.. where you been? we could'nt fill this thing a week ago and now we have this spot?

35 was picked out of the air to make scoring easy....seemed like a healthy number...and we Sured it up after we made a prize available.

Whatever Bub;s wants to do... Like I said.,.. I know you are a competitor and you've played when it was for Nothing so I doubt the weekend thing is your only motivator,,,

two things?

Did you miss this Thread? Why have'nt you signed up? I see you've been around every day? What happened? You just miss it? I don't want some competeing for the Juice and others not.. If you get in your in...

The consenus seems to be that you get in... I'll step back and let Bub's and the consensus be the final Judge...

Nothing Personal at all FFFast.. I know your a Competitor. Believe me I know. Tough call.. If you get in... Good luck.

btw. I fully intend on winning this thing? People do know that right? Its mine. I'm taking this crown.

My Last 4 contests I've been 2nd. You know what I learned after coming in 2nd for four straight times?

2nd Sucks.

I'm in for real. Bring your -A- Game. Cuz I'm bringing Mine.

2) CJ, I capped it @ 35 just to make things a little less stressful on me (Mom's wedding is the next day, but that's another story entirely), but 37 is fine. Thanks for the offer of help, but I've got it covered.

3) Suff, you may be the king, but the guy who's running the contest (me) is the heir to the throne. You're a very worthy challenger, but this contest is mine for the taking.

Admittedly late to enter the "let himin or not?" fray... but I'm with Suff.. closed meant closed... but now that the Bub-ster has let in entries #36 & #37... thereby delaying dinner that night even more while I work with him tabulating all this stuff... LOL... the point is moot...

A BIG thanks also to Suff for putting up a hell of a prize for this thing... Bubbles started this as a fun way to get folks involved here on the board, and we were gonna dip into the family archives for an old athletic trophy (golf or bowling or something stupid) that would become the commemorative memorabilia that would get passed back & forth and add to the trash-talk and quick repartee the board has become famous for... that'll probably still happen - we gotta do SOMETHING with all these old IBM things... LOLOL...

So hey... best of luck to all... and the trophy's staying right here at home with the winner... the same place Bubbles'll be staying after I win Suff's graciously offered prize as well... which is bravely said... since my most recent conquest at the BC was "Caressing... She's A Devil Due.. and who was 2nd? NOT one of mine!!!" Geez, I pick a 38 to one horse on top and I don't get a sniff of the exacta... such is life... Saturday's MY day, gang!

Most Handicapping Trophys come Pre-Engraved with "SUFF" on them. Thats why I did'nt need to make any special requests.

Contest !
I don't need no stinkin' contest !
I'm gonna post my picks anyway !!

May the best 'SUFF' win.

I told Suff once that I don't need luck ...
( but I am praying ... <G> )

Also.. where you been? we could'nt fill this thing a week ago and now we have this spot?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yah, sorry about that Suff..

I had my own contests going on at DRF and with handicapping 4 or 5 tracks a day I couldn't get into the B's Cup.

I honestly don't care about the prize - and actually, there are so many talented horse players on PA that I don't expect to win it anyways.

My sole motivation is the opportunity to compete in a prestigious event.

I swear

If you are the type of player that enjoys mutuels of 9:2 or less, you will finish in the bottom 30's of the contest.

Bombs will be flying all day long so, if you aren't good at picking them, you might as well throw darts because: At least you have a chance of a decent finish.

No joke about the bombs, I was rolling on the floor when I saw those show bets! Could very well be profitable, I wouldn't know, but it won't win anything here.

Bubbles

Bombs WILL be flying, and you won't win solely on "sure things"...but they sure help. I'll figure anywhere from 8-10 grand wins this thing, but if longshots are REALLY firing, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone to win with like 5. One wager could change everything.

so does this mean more rules are going to change?

Can't see why anyone that doesn't want the prize and missed the deadline couldn't have just posted their picks AWAY from the contest...

My thoughts too late, nonetheless...

With PP's promised by 8:00 tonight at DRF, I just wanted to remind everyone of a few things...

1) $1,000 bankroll, no more.
2) $100 bonuses for the largest wager hit, hitting a cold triple or super, or picking 2 25-1+ shots.
3) Get your picks in by post or PM and by 10:00 AM Saturday morning.

Good luck to everyone!

Suff
10-22-2003, 06:28 PM
Point of order.

All pick will be posted Publicly by the player or you Bubbles Correct?

By Post time of race 1 they should be up no?

I can understand if a player wanted to keep his or her selections, and bet structure to themself. But I think in the spirit of an open contest. All Picks and bets Gotta be up when the gate opens for race 1.

I figure your in agreement? I just have'nt seen you say anything in your "rules" posts.

Bubbles
10-22-2003, 07:05 PM
Yeah, you're right, Suff. It IS an open contest. Therefore, ALL BETS MUST BE POSTED IN THE APPROPRIATE THREADS I STARTED IN THE BC FORUMS. I don't want any rumors of one silently making wagers and ending up winning by the length of the stretch.

Suff
10-22-2003, 07:24 PM
right.. But if people PM you thier Picks as you suggest.. Then you will be responsible for Posting them prior to first post.

Makes for some drama.

I actually like "Gateway" better because it was a "gateway" to new friends, new knowledge and even more appreciation for this sport of horseracing.

(My purple handicapping pen is about out of ink, my handicapping glasses are scratched, someone put the BC preview sheets on the floor for the dog -- and I'll just pick the horses that got the most "flow"!)

That was Funny Ried. I did'nt tell you about that? On Travers Day.. I told everyone. I had 45 t-shirts that said gateway..and 45 that said getaway. They made a Goof and I got a double order ...but 1/2 were typo's. When I dropped you at the Airport you graciously gave me $200.00. But If I recall.. I did'nt charge you for the T's? If I did it was my error. I don't think I did. I don't think I charged you for the Polo's either did I? I forget Reid.

From 125 shirts. I think I sold 30. The other 95 , typo's, polo's and getaways i just Gave away.

First thing I did with the shirts was put away your "Purple" stuff. I did my best to accomdate you.... I apologoze for not telling you about the Gateway thing. Do they all say that? I thought I gave you a Couple of Blue one's that said GetAway?

Oh no, Suff. You wouldn't even let me think about paying for those shirts -- and I wear them much of the time. They are my favorite T's and the polo is the only one I wear besides my LSU purple one. What I was most noticed, was that I never noticed mine said gateway. My girlfriend asked where the Saratoga Gateway was and I was telling her about the entrance and how you went through the gate by saying you were with NYRA, etc. She said, "No, I mean THAT gateway", and pointed to my shirt logo. I had not even noticed. I checked the blue one to see and it had gateway on it too. I laughed and said, "Suff was probably talking so fast when he was ordering the shirts, he said "getaway", the T-shirt guy wrote "gateway" -- and Suff probably got the shirts for $4.00 -- I saw him at work when we roamed the streets!"

Regardless, - I LOVE my shirts and as I mentioned in previous post -- I actually like Gateway better. I did "getaway" for three days (and already have some August days marked on the 2004 calendar) and walked through a "gateway" that opened into a sunshine bathed field where I met new acquaintances, handicapping buddies and horseplayers - not to mention the "King of Saratoga" who I can now count as one of my friends indeed.

thats the famous upside down doe-doe bird stamp. i first heard of it while watching a beanie and cecil cartoon, when captain huff n' puff and crew set out to capture this prized specimen. it took quite a fiasco to catch the little bugger, kinda like that big dumb sheepdog trying to catch screwball squirrel, but they caught him, and afterwards they couldnt bring themselfs to take him away from his natural habitat at doe-doe island, so they let him go.

Anyone remeber the 1988 Upper Deck Billy Ripken card?

Thats the First HOLOGRAM'd card set. Also Upper decks first year. The Bat knob had a profanity written on it. In the Picture you could see the profane word at the end of the bat. So there are 3 types. The Error, The error's that were caught at the Factory and airbrushed And the New photo.

The Airbrushed is worth more than the error as there are Less. I had 2 error'd. I sold them for $200 a Piece in 1990.

now thats "class-a all the way"

crissg sent me a pm which was a picture of upper decks billy ripken card. and the first half of my guess, as to what hymn of profanity a ball player would or could possibly inscribe on his bat, was right but the second word of this two word sentence quite suprised me as it is one of a much cleaner nature. all in all, what a great crad. you guys gotta see this, what a riot.
hey thanks criss for the photo shot, a real treat. man thats funny stuff.

send it to p.a. n' see if he'll let you go ahead and post it on the board. wait till you guys see this, its a crack up.

well, well, looks like big billw shot me over the answer in a pm and i must say its good to know that iam not alone. i was starting to scare myself there for a minute thinking i was the only one of a handful in the world that knows the name of cap'n huff n puffs boat.

ok dave, give ya a clue.
1) the name of the boat is a two word name.
2) the first letter in each word is the same letter
3) and the first letter in the first word of the name is L
4) the second word in the name is a girls name.
5) and in order to keep from flubbing up, you cant say the name 10 times as fast as you can, without streatching the cornors of your mouth out to your ears by the 10th time youve repeated the name of captain huff n puffs boat :D

OK all. I should have the results up sometime tonight, although I can't make any promises as to when. My high school football team was losing to their arch-rivals 48-0 at the half last night, so Lord, if this is at all ANY indication as to how I'll do in this contest, thanks for the warning. :D ;)
