This weekend like many i have wagered a decent amount of money on multirace exotics specifically on pick 4's.My question to this forum is when handicapping and wagering on pick 3's and 4's,if you come across multiple horses that will be odds on and very tough to beat,do you pass or do you take a shot and try to beat them.Damn if you do and damn if you dont,if one decides to pass and the favorites get beat then you may have passed on a big score(if your other picks win),if you wager and the chalk rolls in then you look like a idiot.
Example this weekend Switch at even to me was a underlay,i took a shot to beat her and she wins and returns 4.00,Sidneys Candys rolls @ 1/5,Twirling Candy wins and pays 9.00 and the 11 wins the last race pick 4 returns 142.00 for a dollar. Was it even worth investing time and money on a pick 4 like this.

imo, it depends on what you can stomach as a player. If you need to cash tickets and get mad if you miss a $55 pick 4 because you chucked a 1-5 shot you did not like, then I don't think you'd be able to do it.

I have missed thousands of pick 4's that paid $100 or less. I pitch any chalk I do not like, sometimes going very deep. If I dont like the horse and he beats me, I dont let it get me down, because I know I will not make money at racing hitting $60 pick 4s. The rake is too insurmountable in horizontals for that.

That's my 2 cents. Good luck!

If your handicapping narrows P3s and P4s down to the favorite in nearly every race, you're taking a position that the majority of those in the same pool will be taking. There's no value -- PASS.

If you're going to take a shot against a favorite or two... or three... or four... don't take a shot for the sake of taking a shot. Stay focused. Go out on a limb to beat the favorite ONLY when you have a strong opinion AGAINST that favorite; i.e., a "false" favorite. Differentiate between "legitimate", "vulnerable" and "false" favorites, and it will go a long way in building your tickets!

Risk v reward. If you only have to risk a couple of bucks to Return 142 you have made a nice return on investment have you not???

Exactly. You can do a spread ticket and then double up on the chalky one, especially with the 50 cent minimum now.
