Google now has about 5m books in their online library and they are searchable by the period in which they were written.
Entering the term "handicapping" yields this result:
ngrams.googlelabs.com/graph?content=handicapping (http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/graph?content=handicapping&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=0&smoothing=3)
Clicking on the boxes below the graph gives a list of books from that period, just click on the search result to see the book.
ex:
books.google.com/books?id (http://books.google.com/books?id=5brwLg0y0wQC&pg=PA203&dq=%22handicapping%22&hl=en&ei=igwOTcrxNML58AbgqYyIDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CEoQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=%22handicapping%22&f=false)
Not all books are viewable, but many are. For free. I just ran across this so that's about all I know.
