I clicked on a link to notebooks.com and a message box popped up on my screen saying that a program wants access to my computer.

The program was called s7xFoOBO[1].exe or s7xFo0B0[1].exe -- don't know if it was an "O" or a zero.

Also, on the task bar was a yellow and blue Windows Shield.

I didn't want to click on it so I hit cntrl-alt-del and rebooted.

I searched for it using a search engine, but couldn't find anything about it.

Any thoughts?

You may have really dodged a bullet.

The question is whether hitting the link triggered an install of the virus or if the virus was already on your computer. Probably the former.

This computer is new and I only use it at work. Many websites are blocked by a firewall. So this computer has never seen a porn site. I wonder if I could have gotten something from someone's memory stick? Or maybe I just dodged a bullet from the notebooks.com website?

Also, what I don't get is when I search on "s7xFo" every link that is displayed has hyroglyphics below the link.

those pages of hieroglyphics are in Korean, translated by google.

I have seen this before. Is this a laptop ? Some laptop manufactures used to run a program via notebook.com to notify you that they had an update available for your laptop (your laptop data or machine browser info is collected by the website) and it offers to install their update software.......

when I have seen it before, the message sometimes comes up in Korean. sounds funny, but maybe it thought your machine was one of the ones that needed an update. You did the right thing though.......no way you should ever run an exe from a website.........

It's a brand new Lenovo laptop, so maybe you are right.

I had gotten a pop up message box earlier in my session saying that Windows had updates to install. So when I shut it off the updates were installed.

Then when I rebooted, a command line screen said Windows update was configuring my computer. On the command line it showed a lot of files being written to my computer. I assume this was a legitimate update by Windows. Hope so!

Once it was finished running the configuration it seems to work normally.

Oh... an thanks for correctly spelling hieroglyphics. :) I knew my spelling didn't look right!
