The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association Dec. 2 released its listing of United States Graded Stakes for 2011, the results of its annual grading session conducted Dec. 1 in Lexington.

The committee reviewed 689 unrestricted U.S. stakes races with a purse of at least $75,000, and assigned graded status to 474 of them, 13 less than were graded in 2010. A total of five graded races were upgraded, including one new grade 1 race and four new grade 2 races. Five new grade 3 races were also identified, and eight races which carried graded status in 2010 are no longer eligible for grading.

Synthetics did in the Jim Beam and the Lexington.

Sad to see the Pimlico Special and DeFrancis Dash disappear, as well as the Mass Cap.

What does "not eligible" mean? Why are they not eligible?

What does "not eligible" mean?

You have to run the race at least once in the last two years for it to be graded. I'm pretty sure the same thing happened to the Mass Cap before. I seem to remember Cigar winning and it was ungraded.

According to this committee, if a race has not been run for 2 years, the race is automatically ineligble for grading, or if a race has dropped below the graded stake purse requirement.

CJ- The race had not been run from 1990-1994, and as such, it was ineligble for grading until 1997, when it became a G2. It was again ineligble after not being run in 2005-2006, and will not be allowed to have a grade until 2013, if the race is run in 2011 and 2012.

What was Jack Van Berg thinking running Alysheba in this race?

He had to ship from his CA base and he had to carry highweight of a 127 lbs against a stellar field of horses, including arch rival Bet Twice, whom he had been trading decisions with since he was a 2yo.

It was no surprise he went out there and got beat open lengths.

Just think if he had played it smart like they do nowadays and simply targeted the BC Classic.

He probably would have won it and been named HOY.

Safely Kept challenging Housebuster would have been fabulous without the bad break. It probably wouldn't happen today.

Kind of surprised that the Ark Derby didn't get upgraded this year. They have ben waiting a little while since it has turned into one of the best preps for the Derby.

They upgraded it to G1 for 2010. Can't upgrade it from there.:)

She was one helluva filly. Two horses that are forgotten about today, as far as how respected they were in their respective divisions. We haven't had two solid sprinters like that in quite some time and how Safely Kept is not in the Hall of Fame is beyond me.

Today's performance shows the Dirt Mile should be a G3 at best.
