A UK national provided a heads-up on this tragic situation. As everyone knows Ireland has been hit hard by the recession, and part of the fallout is the widespread abandonment of horses by owners too financially strapped to continue to maintain them. According to the linked article in Der Spiegel, as many as 20k horses are on the loose, and Irish authorities are casting about for a way to deal with the problem. Predictably, prices in the equine market have dropped dramatically with some going for as little as 20 euros.

Given the large number people involved in horseracing who visit this site, I thought that either from humanitarian or business motives, there might be some with the ability to intervene in this situation.
