View Full Version : Would an ADW "steal" winning bets?

By this I mean, would they follow a player who won consistently and set up some sort of auto program to bet the same for themselves whenever that player made a bet? Do ADW's follow any sort of protocol on customer privacy and not reusing or reselling your bets in any way?

The nightmare of an optimist.

that's an interesting question. the only thing i knew is that when i was betting in vegas years ago, i could make a bet on a horse in one book, by the time i tried to bet it in another place they would refuse the bet. i was betting baseball there in 1974, i would be the first one in everyday in the union plaza and i was laying $1.30, by the time i tried to bet little caesar's the line was $1.55. needless to say i had a great baseball season, but i blew most of the money back the first month of football.

I think there is an old thread from years back where someone admitted that they worked at an ADW and had seen this happening. They were following certain bets. I believe whomever it was worked as a phone-a-bet operator.

Damned if I know what to search for to find it

I know it doesn't happen at Horseplayersbet.com. For one thing, I think it is an unethical practice. I also think it is bad practice because it would hurt the winners prices (especially when we are talking exotics like pick 3's, supers, etc.).
I want players to win and bet back and give them the opportunity to maximize profits in the long run, and I wouldn't do anything to curb that.

That being said, I can't speak for other ADWs.

i knew a guy from louisiana originally, his nickname was shep. he wound up moving to vegas and worked for the mirage hotel in vegas. he answered the phone at the sportsbook and made about $300 a week. in 2 years he was a millionaire from answering the phone. he continued to work there another 2 years and then became a multi-millionaire.

What you describe is known as "piggybacking", the practice of a Mutuel clerk or ADW employee who makes the same bet as a known winning player.

I can tell you this is ILLEGAL in the state of Oregon now... Employees of ADW's including management, are required by law to be licensed by the Oregon Racing Commission. Part of the rules for license is that no employee is allowed to wager.

So your answer is simple - ONLY wager through fully licensed ADW's who have their operations in the state of Oregon. This includes most account wagering providers. Other states just don't have the legal framework in place, so, you take your chances.

For offshore racebooks "All bets are off" as they say! :p

This is a FALSE STORY, Shep was a runner while working at the Mirage and also when he left the Mirage and never had much money of his own to speak of.

Shep passed away about 3 months ago while swimming in his brother's pool at the age of 51 back in his home state of LA.

RIP Shep, you were one of the good guys.

i am very sorry to hear about his passing. i have not spoken to him in 15 years. what i can tell you is i lent him money that i never expected to get back and he went looking to pay me back after he worked in the mirage 2 weeks. he told me he was doing great. he was giving me his games that he was following and they were all winning. i knew he was a runner after he left the mirage, but he always liked to do that. there is no pre-requisite that a runner has to be broke. i don't think they even exist out there today in the desert.

I didn't say he was broke, he always was a good earner and also paid all his debts, but he was a worker and a gambler like most of us with good days and bad days and carried most of his assets in his pocket daily. I knew him well, we were partners on many superfecta's and pick 6 tickets thru the years.

Shep had a calcified aortic valve that was at the critical stage that he knew about for the last 3 years and feared going in to have it replaced.

BTW: Many runners still exit in Las Vegas today because of sports betting.

David-LVi knew he was sick, but i didn't make anything up. with the games he was giving me it was impossible for him not to make big money and he wasn't to bashful when it came to wagering. and yes he was one of the better guys out there.

The big money he was betting was OPM (other people's money). Shep worked for some real big sports player's from his home state and was a good earner.

In Las Vegas I know a lot of people that make big money and piss it away on horses, sports, or table games.
