Dell 17" monitor. Have a bright up and down (vertical) line. It's exactly 3" from the right side of the screen. Appears to be a bright blue line. Turn off both the monitor and the computer, still there. Any ideas?

Safety glasses & a baseball bat. Show it who's boss, then pray paint it & sell it as art in a garage sale. :2b:

Not sure it's the video card, not running any video, but maybe that doesn't matter. It's a super thin line running up and down. Has been for 1-2 months. But, then again, maybe it's one of the first signs that the monitor is going bad.

video/graphics card = same thing, it produces what you see on your monitor.
try your monitor with another system (test), eliminate your card.
most computer shops will test your card.
you might have your video built into your motherboard, if not it is in an expansion slot, either way it is an easy fix, just replace it with a new card.

...Turn off both the monitor and the computer, still there.Wait. Are you saying that the line appears even when the monitor is not powered?

No, saying I've tried turning both on, then off, and then back on. When back on, it still has the line.

Hardware problem - I'd suspect monitor. Do you have access to another monitor to plug into your computer?

There's a blonde joke in there somewhere (involving whiteout and a computer screen?) :p

Awhile back ms had to release a bunch of updates regarding the monitors when they reboot and start up. (black screens and etc)

Don't know what the numbers were but you should check out the updates before you completely abandon ship.

1. Plug monitor into another computer, even a laptop. Is the line still there?

2. If yes, it is the monitor.

3. If no, it is the video card.

Single lines are usually the monitor. Multiple lines are usually the video card.
