As long as you like the site, its good.
What I did in creating my site was to borrow other sites features and incorporating them into mine. You need some basic HTML knowledge to locate the code on those pages and you need to adjust them for your site.

All I can offer is check out my site and feel free to borrow and use for yours.
It is located at:
http://mysite.verizon.net/r.zanakis/frames.htm
I also have a mirror site with out frames as some people do not like them..

Only suggestion I have is for any online capper, for pay or for free...keep track of your statistics and save you selections/results into an archive.

have fun with your west coast project.

One question. What is the point? Promote it to what end? What is the goal? You need to answer these questions first. What are you trying to accomplish?

Are you selling something? Just want to have fun? Looking for views/discussions ? What's the point?

First advice I would give you is, get rid of that huge picture at the top of the page. What word would you use to describe your site design in a nutshell? How about "cluttered" don't go overboard on pic's and such. it makes it look very busy. That's just my opinion. Content is king. Some people hit a hundred websites a day......... Content is everything. The easier you can relay the information, with as little work on the eyes.......the better. I hit a site like yours, I spend ten seconds and if I don't see some information to keep me reading........I am gone and on to the next place.

Take a look at www.equidaily.com or paulick report. I like those sites, but they are basically news aggregation sites. They are grabbing and scraping everything (most of it) from other sites and allowing you easy access to a ton of info in one stop. That's why they work. I hate both designs. There are better ways.....but that's a matter of taste. Matt Drudge pioneered the news aggregation model and equidaily and paulick are derivative examples. Equidaily is way too busy and way too wide, paulick the same, but that is a matter of taste based on the user/hardware etc. I hate them. But I damn sure use them. It's the content that brings me there. One stop shopping.

You seem to have more of a blog approach. compare yours to this one
http://maryforney.blogspot.com/

Mary has got it together, a little busy for my taste.....but just about 90 percent perfect. But that's just my taste. Notice her pic's are subject related. The only pic's are related to the story/outline of a short article or such. The viewer is not overwhelmed by pic's unless they are related to the subject at hand. Even her pic on top/header is not overbearing. Focus is everything. You look at that page and you naturally drop down into the meat of the page. No distractions. No clutter. Never forget, your target audience (horseplayers) are probably average age of 45 and many many are much older. That means small fonts and hard colors like that dark green you are using, are hard on the eyes.

Just my opine. There are numerous places online to promote your site, but getting people there, just to have them bail and never come back is a whole different thing.
