When do you think the last time there was a race of this magnitude? Do you think this is bigger than Smarty Jones? If you go earlier than that race, you have to go back a long long time.

We haven't seen a horse this popular with the GP since Smarty Jones (maybe Cigar), so I would say the 2004 Belmont.

Of course, if we were to go back to Cigar, the 1996 Citation and the 1996 Pacific Classic also apply.

For sheer magnitude, don't forget Big Brown's Belmont. The connections made for a ton of press there, even though the horse didn't have the likability factor of a Smarty or of a Zenyatta (or even of a Funny Cide). That's what made the outcome of that race so jarring.

Last year's Preakness.

A jockey got off the derby winner giving up a shot at winning the triple crown to ride a filly.

Its only a big race for the owners, trainers, jocks and other actual participants. To you, its the 11th race at a track called Churchill Downs, one of many tracks on your simo menu.

Big Brown's Belmont, the 2007 Classic with Curlin vs Street Sense, and the 2004 Belmont. This is more TVG hype than anything.

It will be the biggest race since the 2010 BC Turf.
