Anyone here have one? any apps that relate to horse racing? I'm thinking about getting one but wonder how much I might use it after the cool factor fades away.

great way to describe it. I am surprised that apple was able to identify this "hole" in the market though. It fits perfectly with what tons of people really wanted all along. Netbook sales are cratering since the ipad came out

Steve Jobs saw this niche market and how wide it was. That's why he is a genius

I'm looking at the 16GB 3g but I might wait until the new models are announced Apple is considering including a camera in the next iteration.

I remember my first Apple computer a Macintosh 512Ke a stand alone before the WWW. Circa 1987.

I should have bought 16b. I bought the middle model/wifi only.

I am not crazy about apps. I have a bunch but still have tons of room left on mine.

I sometimes wish I had the 3g model......but not very often.

The next model is not due until spring if I remember right.

It's a great tool. The new version of the operating system with multi tasking and more is due any day now for the Ipad. If you can get to an apple store, I highly recommend going in and putting your hands on one. You really don't "get it" until you handle one.

just bought one for my wife yesterday. Can't believe how clear the resolution is and how fast/easy it was to set up and to get connected to the net.

all she likes to do it download and look at pictures, go to the various family websites and buy crap online (shoot!), with the iPad she can do all that while sitting on the couch why I'm watching football - oh good, more "together time".

There might be some problems with wi-fi and 4.2. Its being discussed on MacRumors forums, probably will be corrected by the official release Date.

It is the second greatest invention after Coca Cola. This is high praise. I use mine every day for something. If you want to put media on it, I would max out the storage. 3G works well unless you get in big crowds. Only big complaint I have is that occasionally I have problems with the browser, lockups and missing scroll bars on things like this response pane. This may be more due to Apple's arrogance on trying to make everyone conform to them, rather than putting out a product that is flexible. Not having Flash stinks and was almost a deal killer for me. Am looking forward to the new OS as switching back and forth between applications as it is now kills the power reserve.

There are a few I've downloaded. Equibase has their yearbook that lists all stakes winners on the year and has video for them. Steve Crist's Ticket Maket is also available. The BC made an App as well, so you can get nice info on those races. Best apps though are for international racing. Racing Post has a great app as well as Australian Racing. All these were free. Just go to the app store and type "horse racing" in the search and you'll see a bunch. Lot of crap mixed in too

I bought one about three weeks ago and love it. For flying, I download various movies, etc. to watch on the plane. It is the right size, convenient to handle and the battery lasts almost all day. It runs on flash memory so there is no boot up procedure. When you turn it on, it's instantly on. The apps for magazines and newspapers are awesome and it is by far the best book reader out there.

The lack of flash video is a problem since so much horse racing video and streaming uses it. Twin Spires has an app and hopefully more will follow. There are things it won't do due to Apple's intransigence but it's still worth owning for everyhing else it does. I was hoping it would be something I could take to the track and quickly look up videos but it's not going to happen.

How does the ipad handle PP's?

OTM Al

How does the ipad handle PP's?

Theoretically you can get the free iBooks app and use it to open pdfs you've saved through iTunes, which is the database the iPad interacts with in saving files, downloads, etc. iTunes can be run from pc or mac, so no problem there. Frankly though I couldn't figure it out in a couple minutes and lost patience, so instead I bought an app for $1.99 called GoodReader which is really good at downloading and organizing pdfs and other file types (I know it works with docs). With it, you can put in the address where the pdf is linked to and use it to save target. I've been able to do this by using the browser to go inside the secure website, then copy that link into GoodReader and then save the pps that way. You are supposed to also be able to use it to do mark ups on them, but I think that won't work with pps as they are secure files. Otherwise, you can just leave the opened pdf in a browser window and go back to it, but if you lose connectivity, you can be screwed and have to download again. Ralph is actually a lot more savvy on these tech issues so he may have better advice.

Goodreader and ReadleDocs is what I use for PDF pp's that I create in Equisim and send over to the ipad. Don't forget, you can email your pp's to yourself also. You don't have to hook up the Ipad. Create them on your main machine and email them and receive them on your Ipad.

Al, apple has un-officially made it known that you should be "hard booting" the Ipad once a day. That is what makes things slow down and crash. Do the hard shut down, power down and restart it and the problems go away. Much like we used to have to do with earlier versions of windows. I have been doing it, and almost every problem I had with programs crashing, is gone.

Btw, al is right about media. If you are going to put lots of songs or movies on the Ipad.....get the larger memory version. I only have about 500 songs on mine, but I also have 2k on a USB stick that plugs into the radio in my truck.

Remember, the IPad is a bluetooth device. It requires stereo headphones if you are going to use a bluetooth ear piece. You have to make sure you use the right one. Some won't work. If you have a bluetooth enabled car stereo you can use the Ipad in the car and you can listen to audio books, music and gps directions from the Ipad right through your stereo in the car. It is very cool for this kind of stuff. You can even watch a movie and have the sound come out through the car stereo. I haven't done that, but have heard it works great for long trips. Of course this is a benefit mostly for your passengers.

I recently got this app http://ootunes.com/
4.99 and it carries hundreds of radio stations from around the country. It is awesome.

those of you with new Ipads.......you gotta have "Pulse" and "Flipboard"

maybe, but those are two different devices... i can see myself taking the ipad to the track, as its so easy to carry around. I would hesitate with a laptop unless I knew I could safely leave it in one spot (and at a track that's probably not gonna happen).

Was just playing with the reader capability a bit, and it looks great. Tried the kindle app, the iPad eBook reader, and a pdf, and they all seem nice. The kindle readers size, ease of page turns and other functionality seem much better than the kindle itself. Only thing left to test there would be the eye strain from the screen brightness in the dark versus the eInk screen with a book light.

Surfing the net is pretty easy, but the onscreen keyboard would take some getting used to for sure. Overall, I'd definitely love to have one, but I wouldn't buy it myself at the current price points.

I bought a 64Gb 3G model mainly for importing my wife's Korean DVD's to it for a trip we are taking early next year. Last year I put them on a Creative Zen XiFi2 but she did not like watching them on a 3 inch screen. I transferred one of her DVD's to the iPad and the video quality is amazing.

I've been playing around with it and can see how easy it is to use for reading news articles (USA Today, Fox Business, NY Times etc). I did try the Twinspires video but found that it had a severe lag (~ 2+ minutes) from real time, so it would be unpractical to use (at least for me).

I'm still exploring the iPad's capabilities and will try the book reader and some magazines. I did not get a case when I purchased it so I have not been too portable with it. The UPS guy will be delivering one of the Saddleback leather cases today, so our iPad will now be more mobile.

JustRalph - you should get a commission from Apple as it was your posts that got me looking at the iPad. So far it is truly impressive!

Initial observations
- adds considerable protection to iPad
- also adds weight (~1#)
- excellent for watching videos while on a table or other hard surface (this was the primary reason/(excuse) for iPad purchase
- excellent for use in recliner as the "A" shape lends itself to insertion of hand or arm for holding it stable on body.
- case cutouts allow access to all iPad ports and switches
- rather stiff leather because it is new; I'm sure it will "soften" at the fold with use

I spent a good amount of time "testing" my girl's iPad last night as a reader (OK, I read in bed for three hours, lol). Using the kindle app was great (much better than reading on laptop or the original kindle). Inside the kindle app, you can quickly adjust not only the font, but also the screen brightness & the background color (either black text on white background, brown on beige, or white on black). Also, if you get tired of holding up the Ipad and turn it to landscape, you have the option of having the book present itself as one page or a left & right page.

I would say the only downside I found was that the weight of the iPad is much more than a dedicated reader and as you get a little tired, you'll start noticing the effort it takes to hold up the iPad. I'm guessing one would have to find a stand or some type that fits his reading his style (I was pretty much lying flat on my back).

I definitely like the iPad much more than I thought I would, except for the price point. Hopefully, more competition this year will drive down price points. It is also possible that my new found love of the iPad could drive me to look at other tablets.

I stay up late, and get up late. In fact when I get up, it is post time! So, I fire up me trusy ole Ipad(had it since they first came out) and load 2! instances of Twinspires. The first one is the normal one, and I use that for wagering and checking odds changes, etc, post times for the tracks I am interested in that day...

But for the live video of the race itself, I fire up.........wait for it......

m.twinspires.com
log on there too! and select wager now. (Usually, I have already decided on my wager and placed it on the regular site) Now select the track you want to watch, and then select(down a bit on the page) then select Live video...it will load in the Ipad....enjoy! Of course, you can bounce back and forth between the two sites using the browser if you know how. The video stops when you leave the mobile site but is easily restarted, hit the back arrow to get out of the video and choose your next track to view.

My girlfriend bought a pogo sketch stylus for her iPad, and I got to play with it a bit tonight. I downloaded two note taking apps, Penultimate & Sundry Notes.

The pogo sketch stylus is small and compact but not so thin that it felt uncomfortable in my large hands. I have done some pen computing in the past, and never liked the feel of how the stylus moved across the page (like signing your name on an electronic credit card machine). The pogo has a small foamy piece on the end that if you didn't know better would think it was an eraser, but it's actually the end that makes contact with the iPad, and seems to slow down the movement as you make contact. It works great!

The accuracy of the Penultimate app was pretty incredible. As bad as my handwriting is, my chickenscratch was perfectly copied onto the iPad. I didn't explore too many of the featuers, but did find that it was easy to email a note set as a pdf.

The note taking on Sundry Notes was much more than adequate, but not quite as good as Penultimate, but it had a number of other features that made it somewhat like a paint program. It was easy to write notes, type text, add symbols, links, or even add pictures and record voice recordings to attach to parts of your note (I think penultimate can do this as well, but didn't play with it).

I didn't have time to play with marking up a pdf to test the accuracy of where you make contact, but hopefully will get some time to do that some time soon.

Overall, the experience was first rate, and I would definitely use it as functionally as any legal pad. I'd definitely recommend getting the pogo sketch stylus to anyone who has a touch screen device.

CBedo, you convinced me. I just ordered a couple......... :ThmbUp:My how things have changed....but not that much...

20 years ago while in college, I would take Caltrain from Menlo Park to San Mateo & Bay Meadows. I had this beat up old two sided leather folio/clipboard that was my handicapping center. Form on the clipboard that I'd mark up with one of those old four color bic retractable ball point pens, and I'd make notes on the pad about things I didn't want to forget or make betting notes before I'd head to the window.

Now, back to the present.

After playing with my girlfriend's iPad & stylus, I could totally envision a very similar sized leather folio but instead of a pad of paper & the form, I'd be looking at dual (yes, two, not one!) iPads, with race/horse info (& a good wifi connection) and a digital notepad (and any other apps I might need), marking them up digitally with the stylus.

I have often wondered if it is possible to get a copy of DRF past performances in PDF format and then use some sort of electronic pen to make notes on the past performances that are displayed on the computer -- and then save those notes and then the next time you open the past performances all of the markups re-appear.

Seems to me a lot of handicappers would use it if it was available.

I have been using a BoxWave Capacitive iPad Stylus. The tip looks like half of a rubber ball and is hollow. It is much more precise than my large fingers. It also has a lanyard with an end that fits into the earphone port. Stores conveniently on top of the iPad when I close the leather case. Is about the same diameter as some pens, so is comfortable to use.

After using the BoxWave Capacitive iPad Stylus for a while I find that it is not comfortable to use for any duration. I have found a much more comfortable and less fatiguing stylus from Stylus-R-Us. I am using the "Terminator". It is much larger in diameter and can be extended to ~ 9 inches.
I find that the longer length is perfect for using with the iPad while I am in my office recliner.

If this is true no ipad for me and a lot of other people, not that Apple would care as they continue to sell millions of ipads.

much ado about nothing. The kindle app is great. I will just order the books on the Original Kindle, and transfer them. If they won't let me do that, somebody will find a hack in a about ten minutes.

I think you are right the original article spread over the internet until Apple
made a partial denial, will see what happens tomorrow.

Rupert Murdoch's "The Daily" newspaper app came out today.

It is pretty damn nice. And at 99 cents a week......... or even less at 40 bucks a year.......maybe the final nail in the coffin for many "paper" publications.

Ok, changed my mind. I like the design. The content has the same problem any regular paper has. Most of it is old by the time I read it.

I hit the net 5-7 times a day just for news updates. This thing is updated once a day. Not enough for me. I can't stand old news............

For a long car trip maybe....... but not every day.

Made a mistake and looked at the ipad for the first time today at Best Buy. May have to buy one (or two). My wife wants it for a book reader and surfing the net...which I presume is easily doable. She was concerned that the unit seemed a bit warm and may not be good to have on your lap or for reading in bed. Thoughts?

I want it for surfing the net, reading newspapers, jcapper html reports, and watching horse racing video and betting.

Ralph, I presume they have multitasking out now. Will I be able to watch/bet a race through twinspires while having the JCapper html report or a pdf document displaying at the same time? If so, I am in. Awaiting your reply. Oh yeah, who has the best prices on the ipad?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Mine Never gets warm? I don't get that observation at all? I use mine in a case most of the time, but I have also used it without the case, many many times, no heating issues at all. ***don't buy the apple case. It sucks. Tons better out there.

I want it for surfing the net, reading newspapers, jcapper html reports, and watching horse racing video and betting.

Oh yeah, who has the best prices on the ipad? The Ipad is normally the same price everywhere. I recommend buying at your local Apple store or the applestore.com. I also recommend the warranty. 100 bucks.

Remember, we are 90 days or so away from the new Ipad 2....... Wait ? You make the call.

http://store.apple.com/us?cid=OAS-US-DOMAINS-applestore.com

Sure you can do all that. I do it all at the same time. I use the Mobile version of twinspires to watch the races (no flash needed) and bet in another browser window using the "normal" version of twinspires. The multi-tasking is a little clunky, but works fine. You have to hit the home button twice quickly to reveal all that's running in the background, and choose an app. You can switch between different browser windows right in the Safari browser. You can also use some other browsers that are out there.

I have to tell you. You might want to wait. The next 90 days are going to be very very crucial to this market. I am truly excited about some of the upcoming Android Tablets. They will have dual core processors and very very slick. The difference is the apps. But they will all do what you list above. Including reading books etc via the kindle software. Check these two videos out. These products are about 90 days away or less.

On these new tablets, no need for Twinspires mobile for video. That makes me very interested. The mobile Twinspires experience works, but not as well as the full video.

Kindle Apps & Netflix Apps both currently work on the Ipad but are not yet integrated with many of the upcoming tablets. Amazon has advised 2011 for Android capability and Netflix is still working on security issues with content so you might check the Apps availability if you purchase anything other than Apple. .

$429.00 (refurbished) for the entry level Ipad at the Apple store.

Thanks for the valuable information. I may wait as you suggested, if for no other reason that a new generation ipad should drop the price on the old generation.

Thanks again.

Spent enough quality time of my own with one to make this decision.

Jim,

I am not Ralph, so I hope you don't mind my feedback about the iPad. I have spent "quality time" with my baby...oh yeah. Prior to buying my iPad, I used to say things like, I have no need for a jumbo iPod. That lasted until I purchased one for my lovely wife who wanted one for reading and websurfing on the train. Once I had one in my hand, it was like crack cocaine (figuratively of course!).

I have one complaint about the iPad, so I will get it out of the way right now: I do, despite my affinity for it, believe that it is overpriced. It's not ridiculous, but it is pricey in comparison to its ever-growing field of competitors. The accessories are also expensive.

Naturally, being the degenerate horseplayer that I am, I quickly took to the task of learning how to use it as a handicapping/betting platform. The bad news is that there is now way to install jcapper or any other commerical software onto the iPad. The good news is that there are ways to easily get your reports onto the iPad. If you want, you can actually remote into your home PC and handicap in real time.

Putting the reports into iPad is straightforward after you have done it once. First, you will need a PDF reader app for the iPad. The most popular one is Goodreader. It is nice and easy to use. You sync the reports onto the iPad via iTunes. So, you will create the report and use Goodreader to sync it to your iPad. Easy. The really nice thing is that even though the type is small on the iPad screen, it is still easy to read because of the good screen resolution.

To create your reports, you need only download a free PDF print driver. I use CutePDF (hey, I didn't name it!). You set the PDF print driver as your default printer prior to running your first report - I believe you call them UDMs. Hit the print button and a save dialogue box will put up. Name your file as appropriate. These will be the files that you sync onto the iPad.

iOS 4 brought with it multitasking. You can check out this link for a primer on how it works: http://www.gilsmethod.com/multitask-ipad-ios42

This site has a wealth of information for the iPad owner.

As I said before, you can also remote in to your home computer. There are numerous apps to support this. I use TeamViewer. It is free for personal use and works well. It is really cool to remote in and use any software you want. Like I said, you can handicap in real time.

As far as betting platorms go. TVG and TS both have mobile platforms. I use TS as they support their free video. Yes, you can definitely watch video and have your reports in the background....a couple of quick taps away when multitasking.

One of the overpriced accessories that I bought was a case. I first purchased one of the thin, flimsly Apple cases for $40. I was so underwhelmed by the quality that I returned it and bought something way more expensive, but at least it is something that I like. It is the ZaggMate case. You can get it with or without bluetooth keyboard. Considering that Apple sells their keboard for $60, I popped for the keyboard/case setup. It looks nice, is thin and works great.

If you are one that is going to be heavy duty on the handicapping/betting on the go, and if that is your primary purpose for getting an iPad, then you might be better off with a laptop. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a cool device to read books, surf the net, handicap on the go, use a multitude of useful apps, do light e-mail/docs, all in sleek, lightweight package, go for the iPad.

Written by someome who said they would never buy one - EVER.

You actually don't have to sync to iTunes to get your reports. You can also just email them to yourself.

Kingfin,

Thanks for the great reply. As an update, I went ahead and bought an inexpensive Kindle for my wife for reading. It is nice and should be kinder to the eyes for that than the ipad.

I actually use primo pdf to take any printed report and make it a pdf file. Oddly enough, Kindle supports pdf files so I was able to transfer a jcapper report as well as "ahem" expanded greyhound pp's and create pdf reports with no problem. While it looked fair, that is not the solution I am looking for.

Right now, I play from home but in the next year or so I hope to move and will be playing more from a local greyhound track. That is why I am looking for mobility like the ipad so I do not have to take a bunch of printouts.

I think I am going to wait for things to shake out a bit and then decide whether to buy an ipad or something comparable for taking to the track. I will be checking here for information as new stuff comes out as I primarily will use for racing.

Thanks again to all.

Jim

it will change your life. Or at least the way you do things. I am going to hold off on the new one. For a little while anyway.

The inclusion of Imovie and GarageBand on the new one (4.99 a piece in the app store) due to the new dual core processor and the 720p HD camera makes for some interesting possibilities. It makes it basically a mobile TV station or Sound system for performers. You will be able to record an interview, or any video event and edit it on the fly and then upload it
within minutes.

Add in the front facing camera and you can Facetime (video calls) or do conference calls from anywhere you can get an internet signal, including 3G.

I think it will really be worth it for me to display another stream of a track running once in a while with a Ipad. Past Performances look good on the Ipad and the Major Mud like moving of the windows looks like it will be natural instead of two mice for two computers. What I really want to do is get a Ipod as well and take Bris files from the Bris site while I am in Las Vegas at hot spots. As the Ipod's are sold they will not do that unless other than Safari is used. They will not save zip files as is unless you buy other software. Oh I also like the weather application for locations of the tracks in both Ipad & Pod. The watered down application "Numbers" is a real disappointment for any power user, but that is what real computers are for.

Anyone get V2 ?

From what I read, it's worth picking up if you don't have the first one. Owners of V1 should just keep using their current one... it'd be wasteful if you have to upgrade a $500 device every year (although apple may want that). The lighter weight and thinness are big pros... the cameras are so-so at best (but plenty good for video calls).

Some early buyers are complaining of backlight bleeding....let's see if this boils into an issue that apple has to address or if they will try to sweep under the rug. I don't know if it can be fixed via software.
