Hope to be more productive than Sunday's card.

Monday Wheeling Matinee

Race 7: Kiowa Kelsey (# 1) 3/1

Going for three in a row and meets a less speedy field. Those around him do not have the early speed so this one should have a clear path to the inside and wire this field. Two entrants interest me. CTW Trident (# 6) drops in class and though has not shown any speed of late, he should still be considered a threat based on class alone. The other one I tend to like TB’s Derailer (# 3) who has enough early speed to be in close proximity to the pace. If given a clean trip, should be on the ticket at a decent price.

----------------------

Race 9: Dublin Allstar (# 7) 15/1

Has never raced below this level (B). Makes 2nd start off the layoff with the drop in class. For those two reasons alone makes this one live for the upset. Just betting him across the board should be enough to make a profit for the whole day.

----------------------

Race 10: Jivin Jiovanny (# 2) 2/1

Moves up the class ladder to level C thus bypassing the D class. That is always a positive sign. Breeding indicated that this one was live to break maiden at first asking with his win last out. His sibling won at first asking on the next race day. See no reason to stop betting this one. To be considered as my Best Bet of the day.

----------------------

Race 14: WW Kay September (# 6) 7/1

Showed some serious signs of life last out. Has 15 wins from 48 starts this year but has been a little larthargic till last race. Could be that this one is getting back on the positive sign of his bio-rhythm. Should be a threat to win it all.

I guess that means Marvin Gaye is the lock of the century on Wednesday.

I do not remember ever seeing a post about Wheeling Downs on the site but it sure brings back many memories. I am originally from Martins Ferry and spent many nights at the dog track. Actually I worked there when it was a harness track. Years ago I also opened a business in Canonsburg the home of Bobby Vinton. Good to see your post.

Hi Freedy
Born and raised in Guntown...don't forget the Four Coins and Perry Como were also from here. Not to mention Currie field back then named after Madam Currie her husband's research on the atom as part of the Manhattan Project. In Jan 2002 I was diagnosed with CML (Leukemia) from playing on a radioactive ball field in my youth which was nothing more than the waste from the radium extraction at the Chemical plant in Strabane.

I recall betting the harness races at Wheeling prior to 1976 which it went to the puppies. Dean Zaimes, Ben Bolon, Bill Efethemes were just some of the guys that raced there that also raced at the Meadows.

Which business did you open in Canonsburg?

We opened the Long John Silver's. I was the District Manager for the Franchisee in Pa, OH and WV.

Do you know John Lis?

I didn't get involved in this thread because of the Canonsburg connection (actually I didn't even notice it on Racetrackdaddy's sig), but I lived in Canonsburg for 4 years from 1998 to 2002.

I'm assuming that was the LJS up next to I-79 across from Hoss's. I was in the area earlier this year and Hoss's was torn down and a Walgreens' went in.

My wife is from Waynesburg, so when we're in visiting her family I usually get to sneak up to the Meadows Racetrack (now Casino) for a while.

Hi Freddy
I have been buying my fish there since they opened...still love it.
Can not say I know John Lis but there are many faces that I still can recall but have forgotten their names. Price of old age I guess.

Thanks for bringing us Long John Silvers to Canonsburg. I used to drive to the Franklin Mall for my fish back in the day then you opened one near the K-Mart (which no longer exists and now is a Home Depot).

I have website that tracks harness racing from the first Saturday in May to early September. It is located at: http://mysite.verizon.net/r.zanakis/frames.htm

I have some links that display some old pictures of the place (Adios 1985, 2007 and the new one in 2009) plus some winner circle pictures of my friends horses.

It is free so when you head up there to the Meadows you may get our view of the races prior to your arrival.

Glad to hear you like the fish. I am retired now but yes I was over the Washington Mall and Franklin Mall from 1976 until 1988 then moved to Champaign, Ill as regional manager then to my present location in Knoxville. My wife and I loved to visit a restaurant named The 21st Amendment located in the Washington Mall. I was also the founding Father and Director of the LJS Muscular Dystrophy Golf Scramble held every year at the Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg, WV. I mention this because I drew a lot of golfers from Western Pa and maybe u either played in it or heard of it.

Freddy

Enjoy your retirement. The Washington Mall is a ghost town now. Seems the mall owner was in talks with a major retailer (Lowes) which was going to purchase the whole place and rebuild. The owner then refused to renew most of the leases and even Penny's left after they built down the road across from the Gee Bee mall on Rt 19. Lowe's did not agree to the deal and all the stores have since moved or went out of business. JC Penny eventually closed their new store and moved back to the old digs. Not many stores there. I have not been to the 21st Admendment but have heard they had good food there back then.
