I'll be down in Miami for a week and I plan on going to Calder a couple times. I was wondering if anyone would have any tips that they would be willing to share? Any good local restaurants I should try afterwards? Should I avoid traveling a certain route at a certain time of day? I plan on going next Saturday and the following Thursday.

Thanks in advance

To be honest with you, don't hang around, at all, in the Calder neighborhood after dark. It's not a very good area. The new casino has three restaurants, I've been told, but I haven't been in there because I don't play the slots. If you want to find restaurants in a much better area, travel west to Miami Lakes. I hope this information helps.

Having lived down in Miami for three years and having spent a LOT of time at Calder I'd suggest that you leave prior to the last race, head down the Tpk and get off in Doral (exit 40? 41?) There is a fine Italian restaurant just about a mile off the Tpk, on the right (there's a Chik-Fil-A in the same parking lot). World class food and no wait.

Oherwise get on 95 and go to South Beach. Yes, it's awful. Yes, it's completely overpriced. BUT...if you head off the main drag and over about two blocks from 10th (I think) then you'll find "Big Pink". They have a stellar menu (for what looks like a diner) and they serve cocktails until...whenever. You'll have to find parking but the food is totally worth it and the walk-around afterwards is worth the hassle of parking. Plan on staying until well after normal hours (say 2 or 3) so that you avoid the typical checkpoints on the bridges. Better yet, drive down to Miami proper and take a cab over the causeway. Eat, drink, be merry and then take a cab back to your car (or home, as the case may be). South Beach; it's a GREAT place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there (for more than two years or so...)

Best of Luck!!! (Bet the closer in the first race at Calder!)

Why would you want to go to South Beach or southern Miami...Go along university ave to pembroke rd and head south to 95 north...Take that to sheridan st and you will find hotels restaurants and shopping malls..Ft Lauderdale is safer and has a great broadwalk at the beach..They also have Haulover Pier that you can check out..I may even have a horse running on the days you may be there..PM me and Ill give you my number. I'd say bet the simulcasts, not the live product.

Just head East for Aventura from Calder.

Great shopping mall with good restaurants Cheesecake factory and some good italians.

If you like burgers go to Bourbon Steakhouse in the Fairmont, best burger in town.

A real good restaurant is Chef Allen's in Leohmans Plaza.

Just do not hang around Calder after the last race.

I rather like playing Calder. But then, I'm not concerned with the quality of racing, only the quality of betting.

I never mentioned quality. It isn't very horseplayer friendly in my opinion.

Go to Joes Stone Crab off 395. I never go to that part of Florida without getting there once. It's been open 98 years, a Florida institution:

Where are you staying while in So. FL? Would be happy to suggest venues near your locale or not far from the track.

Thanks for the tips! Seems to be a popular consensus not to hang around Calder to late. Is Calder really sketchy? Or is the traffic horrible? Or both? We're staying in the northmia beach area.

get over to ft lauderdale and go to 15th street and take it to the end which is the inter coastal, its called " 15th street fishery" restaurant. excellent meal although a little pricey since they changed ownership a couple of years ago. get a window table, nice views of the intercoastal. enjoy
