Hialeah announced their takeout will be 12% for all wagers at their next meet starting December 3. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/59227/hialeah-cuts-takeout-rate-to-12-for-all-bets

Bad news is it's quarter horses, which I haven't a clue how to handicap.

The learning curve isn't as high as thoroughbreds, in fact, it might take a day to figure things out for any regular thoroughbred player.

Hialeah has to rebuild their pool sizes.

A $100 to win would cause precipitous drops whether they're thoroughbreds or quarterhorses. It is going to take a few years to get everyone back on board.

Hoping Hialeah will tough it out in the early going.
The rewards are there - unquestionably.

It is great that a track like Hialeah is not locked into the MEC or CDI family.
And it's even better that a racino is not going to keep this track afloat.

Ultimately it's going to be the horse racing product that carries Hialeah back to its former glory.

what distribution outlets were carrying them previously, anyone know?

I'm pretty sure they were available just about anywhere. I know I had them, and hope to have them again.
The risk Hialeah is taking is that some outlets may decide not to take them. It will be very telling if that happens.

That's what's going to happen for sure. Maybe they're more concerned about getting locals on track.

Even if it's quarter horses, this is great news. The rest of the tracks are watching. They might want to try something similar very soon. I'm very happy to hear about this, and would love to see Hialeah Park being approved to bring back the Thoroughbreds like in the old days. It's the very first track I visited.

If only Gulfstream would do this......but that would make to much sense ;)

All,
Hialeah has announced a 12% takeout (across the board) for their upcoming meet. I believe this will be the lowest % takeout (across the
board) in the U.S. I will post additional information as it becomes available.

All,
Please go to www.BloodHorse.com for "Hialeah Cuts Takeout Rate to 12% for All Bets." This report will give you additional information on this topic.
I realize that Hialeah would eventually like to return to a Thoroughbred Racing Venue at some point in the future and perhaps this new policy could be a new stepping stone to success.
I for one, would hope that a successful meet would affect other track takeouts as well.

Looks like it's time to learn how to handicap Quarter Horses! I've already branched out to Harness due to their low take.

Hey, you never know. If more tracks start doing this, they're going to feel the pressure. Don't you think?

They won't do that, but they Will offer you the opportunity to
piss your bankroll away on a "Quad-Superfecta", a wager SO
stupid they hired a trainer to take over business Operations
so when it fails terribly they can "Blame it on Ritvo"

If so,then we will have to boycott those outlets. This is one thing that should not be allowed to happen.

Precisely. Customers have to keep the ball rolling http://i51.tinypic.com/zv54pe.gif.
The industry is not going to make the changes for the bettor.

The bettors are going to have to force the changes to the horribly out dated signal fees and rebate structures, etc.

Monmouth Park- 15% on Pick 4s and Pick 5s
Delaware Park- 10% on exactas (on track only)
Retama Park- 12% on Daily Doubles and Pick 3s
Portland Meadows- 14% on Pick 4s
Hialeah Park- 12% on all bets.

I see a positive trend developing.

Also somewhat ironic because when Hialeah closed for the second time in 2001, they had 29% takeout on several bets.

Illinois harness tracks, Balmoral and Maywood, now have 15% Pick 4's. The Meadowlands had a 15% Pick 4 last year and Cal Expo harness also had a 15% Pick 4.

I believe Sam Houston still has a 12% Pick 3. I didn't know about Retama Park, glad you mentioned it.

It will start making sense when they begin to see higher handles at tracks doing the experiment.

In 2011, that list will double or triple in size. They're realizing it's the best way to attract more betting dollars. This is a huge positive for everyone.

Agreed Turk. Sometimes it takes rock bottom for things to change. And rock bottom is here.

Edit - this is the exact same track owner, 17 years later. That is the learning curve in racing, apparently.

Wow! Hialeah Quarterhorses go 12% Across the Board Takeout (http://blog.horseplayersassociation.org/2010/10/wow-hialeah-quarterhorses-go-12-across.html)

http://www.hialeahparkracing.com/images/top_features/banner_racing.png (http://www.hialeahparkracing.com/images/top_features/banner_racing.png)According to the Bloodhorse (http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/59227/hialeah-cuts-takeout-rate-to-12-for-all-bets), Hialeah for their quarterhorse meet will go 12% takeout, across the board.

For the players of that sport, you have a pretty clear choice: Los Alamitos who raised their takeout this year to about 22% blended, or Hialeah at an almost 50% discount.

This is in sharp contrast to 17 years ago where we looked at old time racing, being, well, old time racing in a story on HANAblog. (http://blog.horseplayersassociation.org/2009/12/walk-through-takeouts-past.html) Bill Finely was analyzing the Hialeah thoroughbred takeout situation at that time.

From 1993.

"Only this year will be different. Hialeah owner John Brunetti will do the unimaginable; he will make Hialeah the worst place on earth to play horses. Hialeah opens April 1, April Fools' Day for South Florida bettors. Brunetti plans to institute what is believed to be the highest takeout structure in the history of U.S. thoroughbred racing. The take on win, place and show bets will be 23.1 percent and there will be a 28 percent take on all other wagers. Winning money -- never easy at the track -- will be impossible at Hialeah."

17 years......

Moving from "the worst place on earth to play the horses" to "the best place on earth to play the horses"

We are witnessing a full circle development in the state of this game. Losing over 50% of your yearly handle and half your customers tends to do that.

Harrahs chester also has a 15% take on the pick 4

I love the trend that might finally....slowly be developing.
